Army chief voices concern over the spread of fake news

Thailand’s Army Commander-in-Chief, General Apirat Kongsompong, has expressed serious concern over the spread of fake news, some of which seems intended to discredit the government and the military.

He said that, while he did not want to describe the use of fake news as “mind manipulation”, he had observed that some people, when repeatedly exposed to fake news, gradually become influenced by it and finally believe the fake news is true.

In addition to the police being tasked with investigating fake news, General Apirat said that the Ministry of Digital for Economy and Society is in the process of setting up a centre focusing on fake news and the military has taken steps, within its authority, to monitor the problem.

  • Can't argue with him on this.   The most visible and risible victims of fake news are known as  yellow shirts or Padites. They have been absorbing the military's propaganda for decades

  • Sounds like he is getting prepared for his turn at the trough.

yellow shirts or Padites. They have been absorbing the military's propaganda for decades until they now believe whole heartedly that only they have the right to be called loyal and worthy citizens.

Anybody who questions the propaganda that they themselves have swallowed they look down on and label ignorant peasants who must be suppressed and disenfranchised.

Best get comfortable with the idea Pal .. control of media and information is no longer solely in the hands of a few .. The internet is a very powerful medium now that can spread a word in seconds .. regardless of whether its accurate or not .. This dude needs a reality check to introduce him to the here and now ..

I presume that fake news intended for the oppositions and political activists are not his concern. What a fair and ethical man. Pin a democracy medal on him.

look in the mirror.

I get the impression that any news that he disagrees with will be considered fake news...his people may soon become the clearing house for "all" news to ensure it meets his approval...

What could be more "fake" than that?  ????

Fake news is not required in order to discredit the government and military, theyre doing just fine themselves!

I don't believe this story.

So true General armour face could be the first casualty of his own observations????

Fake news, can't even come up with thier own ideas, what next the Russians tried to  interfere with Thailand's free and fair elections ???? Might have been a bit more convincing if he could have come up with a single example of this fake news.

The rule requiring O-A visa applicants to have insurance cover was due to be implemented on July 1st. Then there was going to be an announcement about it this week (last week). I think the people spreading this fake news should be shot. Oh, wait a minute, where did I read it? 555

When it comes to fake news General Apirat is up there with the best of them. At the time of the recent bombings he blurted out that the bombings had been done by the same people who did the Bangkok bombings in 2006. Seemingly he forgot that no one was ever found responsible for those bombings.
