Government urged to issue an executive decree to ban paraquat

A member of the Democrat Party’s policy committee has challenged the government to issue an executive decree to ban the use of the weed killer paraquat immediately.

Mr. Atthawich Suwanpakdi said in his Facebook post on Monday that paraquat, which is inexpensive but effective, has already been banned in at least 51 countries, including the entire European Union, China, Laos, Kuwait, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Cambodia “because those governments are concerned about the health of their people.”

Despite the known toxicity of paraquat and its widespread contamination of fruits and vegetables, which poses a health threat if consumed over a long period of time, he said that previous attempts to ban it in Thailand have been a complete failure. Not even the now defunct National Council for Peace and Order, with its special power under Section 44 of the interim constitution, managed it.

I used to spray my driveway with that stuff to kill weeds

what I don't get is how Thailand is able to export farm produce to countries that ban most of the toxic pesticides that Thai farmers are using

we all buy local produce here - I wish I had a home testing kit that could tell me the chemical content of my carrots

maybe I don't want to know

Obviously too much money involved somewhere too worry about health (or rather death) issues of people.

The local ag department up here told the mango growers association it would be a definite ban starting in 2020.  If they can come up with a realistic organic alternative that would be great!   Tic, tic, tic we are waiting.......

Thailand........ the "Hub" of toxic food.

Government decisions are on hold at the moment awaiting final envelope negotiations.

The Minister originally promised to ban three chemicals (paraquat, glyphosate, and chlorpyrifos) this year. But now the Deputy Minister announces that's now down to two and more likely only one.

We know then that one envelope has been received from one chemical company, there is a promise of an envelope in the mail by another and dialogue is continuing for the third.

I get the sense that an "Executive Decree" is the "democratic" equivalent to Article 44.

What are you talking about? Mangoes have grown organically since the beginning of time. They don't need poisons to survive.

Just take it for granted that most food in Thailand is toxic in some way...  mostly crops. Thailand along with most of SEA have used it for so long that even the ground has been poisoned.

'Despite the known toxicity of paraquat and its widespread contamination of fruits and vegetables, which poses a health threat if consumed over a long period of time, he said that previous attempts to ban it in Thailand have been a complete failure.'.......  pigs at the trough is why it hasn't been banned. To much money to be made from it's use.

They probably don't declare it

It's all good and well to ban the products . But the big problem is it kills the weeds and grasses in the paddocks Very cheap and very quick. No one is going to stop using the products unless some one finds a better and /or cheaper way to get rid of the weeds and grasses . the farmers simply can't pay for hired labour to do the job as sufficiently  and as quick as the herbicide  :jap:
