Bangkok World Snooker: Carter gets out of jail as "Tong" rolls back the years

Ratchapol Pu-Ob-Om rolled back the years with a come from behind win on Day 2 of the Six Red World Snooker Championships in Bangkok. 

 

The veteran Thai player - better known as Tong - was down 0-2 vs Australian Kurt Dunham in their second round match on Tuesday afternoon but rallied to stay in the tournament with a 5-2 victory.

 

A thrilled crowd at the BCC Hall in Central Plaza, Lat Prao saw Tong punch the air in delight as he potted the final ball. 

 

Elsewhere Ali Carter of England survived a scare against former world champion Ken Doherty as the Irishman came back to level at 4-4 from 0-4 down. Carter won the deciding final frame for a 5-4 triumph.

Earlier in an entertaining match featuring potting errors but high class safety play three time World Snooker Champion Mark Selby from Leicester was beaten 5-4 by world number 20 Gary Wilson also of England. 

 

Their match lasted well over two hours. 

 

In the morning there was a welcome win for crowd favorite Jimmy White MBE. Coming to Bangkok off the back of winning the World Seniors at The Crucible theatre in Sheffield the veteran campaigner won 5-4 vs Ryan Day of Wales.

The lady wild cards at the tournament did not fare quite so well. Reanne Evans of England the current ladies' world champion who won the championship again in Bangkok in June has lost both her games so far and faces world number 10 Ding Junhui on Wednesday on Table 1 at 4pm. 

 

The women's world number two Ng On Yee from Hong Kong also suffered her second defeat losing to main Thai hope Thepchaiya Un-nooh 3-5.

 

Reigning champion Kyren Wilson of England has won both matches and faces Thai Passakorn Suwannawat on Wednesday. Four time world champion Scotland's John Higgins has also won both his matches on the TV table. 

 

Play continues Wednesday with the final matches of the group stages. Sessions begin at 11 am, 1.30 pm, 4 pm and 6.30 pm. 

 

Last 16 and quarter final matches over 11 frames are on Thursday with the semi finals over 13 frames on Friday.

 

Tickets available at the door for 200 baht enable spectators to see all sessions in a day. Prices remain at 200 baht until the best of 15 frame final on Saturday when admission will be 300 baht. 

 

Table One matches are being shown on True Channel 686.
