My 5-year-old son who goes to one of the international schools in Bangkok needs a native English tutor for his writing.

What should be the going rate if asked to have the 1 on 1 lesson in our apartment?

What should be the minimum and the maximum rate for this case?

Thank you very much.

Thank you both. My son needs to take the lessons as soon as possible.

Is 1500 THB too expensive?

Please advice me.

Depends on the qualifications of the teacher. You get what you pay for.

From 500 upwards depending on difficulty level. Nothing below.

It was 500 30 years ago. The fee will depend on the skill, experience and qualifications of the teacher. And their area of specialization.

Can't be a very good international school if he needs tutoring. Have you tried approaching the school and asking why?

Is the 1500 baht per hour/lesson/week/term? How long are the lessons?

NO, it depends on the ability of the teacher to impart knowledge.  I have some experience in adult education and have worked with some very smart people (PhD's etc) who simply did not have the ability to transfer knowledge. They simply did not have the ability to communicate.

I've also worked with trades teachers who were far superior in that area.

That is fair but you want a qualified TEFL teacher who specialises in teaching young learners. At the age of 5 children can learn over 10 new words a day A child can learn through a immersive approach,  being exposed to English language, TV  films, videos,  comics  books and conversation.

Up till the age of 11 kids brains are designed gor language learning. Most TEFL schools have kids classes which are better to learn in than solo tutor situations. They also do summer schools and weekend avtivities. Check out International House and The British Council for quality teachers and advice. PM me if you want any ideas.

Any school worth their salt would have programs in place to help new/slow learners or those with learning disabilities. Defninitely the OP should approach the school frst and ask about this, before shelling out 1500 an hour for extra classes.

1500 THB is the rate for 1 hour.  The teacher is teaching at an international school and he is a qualified teacher for young learners. I am not sure how good he is but do you think it is worth 1500THB?

My son's international school has an Additional English Support class which was recommended to My son at first but it is way too expensive.....

I'd say 500-600 an hour including the same amount transit (BTS MRT taxis etc). That's what I'd charge. The child's attention span couldn't be more than an hour. 1500b - covers transit time and costs. Could tag on another 30 mins if the kid was focused. If you'd meet in a mall co-working space by the teachers house this would drop the transit costs. But for myself transit is hot, misrable and work. If you libe6on a transit stop that should reduce the rate imo. Writing even more than reading is a slow process to teach. Are you certain he needs help writing and not with phonics or vocab? That's pretty young.

And yes, teachers should be available and helpful. I tutor at my school when asked.

If he's from a top 5 school, qualified for young learners, has Ed degree from home country. Teaching two 40 minute blocks in your home, total 100 minutes. I'd say that's fair price. Assuming it's about an hour transit for him door to door. Go with it two months and evaluate. Have him tell you what will be taught and learned, acquired in that two months by your son.

BTW it's not easy to find such people. They're not going to drop their plans for an hour of work for a few hundred baht.

I am an international school teacher and 1500 / hour is high, especially for a child that is five years old.

Many thanks for your response. I agree with you.. I thought 1500 / hour is too high for 5 years old.

He just needs help on making easy sentences, phonics and readings.

I wish you could be my son's tutor. Can you teach him? ????

Many thanks for your prompt reply. He is qualified and has ED degree from home country. However,

I still think 1500 is too high for 5 years old.. He just needs help on understanding easy sentences, phonics and readings. It is not like writing essays to go to college... I think it should be somewhere between 800-1000 THB / hour....I wish you are my son's tutor.. Please let me know if you are interested.

Are you sure he even needs a tutor?  If he just started how do you know he is not doing well?  These schools and teachers like to drum up extra business for themselves in case you don’t know that, and now realize from this high price.  So what if he lags a little at 5 years old, let the expensive school you are paying deal with it!!!  Go complain if you must, put it back on them first!!!

Your English is good, why don’t you start using English in your household for a while around your child to help him?

You pay for an international school.

And at age 5 your son is already so much behind that he needs extra private lessons for writing ?

This is not what I would expect. How much writing skills does a 5 year old child need?

Where I come from they play games at school at that age.

If your tutor is somebody who'd never taught kids, it's way too much.

You can do a lot for him, check Youtube learning English, also check Bangkok Post online, for young learners. ( In addition) Plus plenty of other free websites.

Let him watch a lot of cartoons with English subtitles, it will pay back.

A good teacher will know when your son didn't understand him.

The trick is to make it look like a game and teach him writing in a way that it's fun for him.

Please think about at what age you've started to speak, read, and write your mother tongue. So younger, so better.

I don't disagree. I'm simply stating that if I were that guy and you wanted me to travel cross town to have a chat with your auntie the costs are the same and his skills and abilities are as well. It's very possible he needs help with phonics or whatever. I mean what kinder kid is doing serious writing? The school should be able to define his weaknesses and issues clearly if it's a top 10 international school.

I agree 1500 is too much for a child but that's the guy's rate? Have you tried working with him? Maybe just focus and organization might be it.

I realize I'm talking about a kindergartener but the one thing I always tell my students:

You want to improve your writing? Read and review Quizlet vocab flashcards. But READ.

I'm not sure there's a 5 year old in the world that needs a tutor for writing. Let 5 year olds be 5 years old. Plenty of time to learn to write yet.

I agree with you all. Yes. I decided to teach and read for him in my spare time. I will let my son be 5 years old and have his school deal with his issue without paying extra. They should be capable if they are one the top schools in Bangkok...

Thank you so much. It would be great if you could leave your messages as they are now.
