Airline cracks down on smuggling by its flight attendants

Thai Airways has introduced measures to deal with employees who avoid tax on goods they bring into country. The airline recently learned from customs that some of its flight attendants had been caught smuggling goods from Italy that exceeded the permitted allowance. Disciplinary action will be taken against such employee, it said.

Suthirat Siriphananon, chief executive officer of In-flight Services at Thai Airways, said that the company has a policy that forbids employees exceeding the allowance for duty-free and other goods with the intent to avoid import duty. The company monitors suspicious behaviour and informs customs of any infractions.

Customs officials recently intercepted some female flight attendants returning from Italy who had sought to bring in more products than permitted and had not declared the excess. The women were fined and their actions reported to the airline. Thai International penalizes employees who go against company's regulations, with the maximum penalty involving dismissal.

Got to make up the tourist shortfall somehow hence the scanners as your luggage gets turfed out in a bright new cash bonanza frenzy with choices like pay up or lose pay up and keep or just pay up nothing more said as what's deemed contraband is open to any interpretation depending on daily takings ????

So the warning given by Thai Airways to flight attendants and crew on 26th July had little or no impact? What a surprise!

It would appear that for some flight crew smuggling provides a nice second income.

Next the country will be banning all foreign foods in the shops.

Welcome to 1957.

All the perks are disappearing fast except the Ministers flights to wherever

Normal practice..

They always used to be a good source of newly-released iPhones from the US, might have to pay full price next time.

They have ALWAYS been doing it and will always. Who cares to lose a maid and waiter job anyway ?!

Soon they can put all the attendants bags through X-ray on arrival ?

So a crew does 2 int' flights a week and each can bring 200 cigs twice a week and a Ltr of good whisky. Some don't smoke or drink so after clearing customs they pass on to the one who wants it. Depending on numbers that could add up.

Leave without a 'designer' hand bag and come with one on your arm, twice a week.

With the new scanners at the airport we will also get done. My annual restock of peanut butter, stuffing and tartare sauce could land me in big trouble!

Down those steps to the tarmac.

Rooster

Not sure if 'tarmac' was intended as a euphemism?

Isn't it sad that goods are so much cheaper in much richer countries than Thailand?

By such huge margin that it's worth for people to smuggle it.

Viva la submarines and other toys

I've just realised the euphemism! It must be asphalt.

I have checked in a few times in London at the same time as the crew.  The cabin crew generally have a small case and a carry-on bag but the cockpit crew seem to have 1 or 2 enormous hard plastic cases each, I always wonder what they need for a 1 or 2 day lay over tat will fill those.????

Hilarious!

The Thai/THAI flight attendants have been smuggling for DECADES.

I friend of my family runs an entire luxury wine shop from smuggling in wines from Europe.

They are such clowns, the lot of them.

My supplier had no vegemite last week, this explains it.

No transfers to inactive post?

Dated a number of FA's in the past, including a couple of TG FA's...  They're all at it - Bottles of Champagne out of business class was always a common one, as was bringing a load food in from other countries... but especially popular were the range of fancy toiletries to be sold on Instagram or Facebook, and also luxury handbags, watches could be purchased to order - it has always been a great little sideline for flight attendants.

There's a whole shopping mall in the chatuchak area based on airline smuggling, i forgot the name tho, maybe someone else knows. It's run by some hiso thai lady

It’s a shame that dismissal isn’t considered for other ‘organisations’ in Thailand who contravene the law, instead of ‘being moved to an inactive post’.

And next week on the next trip to Italy she can 're-enact the crime'....... and the next trips as well.......... LOL ......
