Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn

Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said he would ask the Cabinet today (Tuesday) to grant an extra two-day holiday to government officials and state enterprise employees to boost tourism.

Phiphat said he would ask the Cabinet to consider the proposal during the weekly Cabinet meeting.

The minister said he would ask the Cabinet to allow officials to take two days leave in October without counting the time off as the annual leave.

The minister expressed confidence that the extra holidays, if approved, would support the government’s “tasting, shopping and utilizing” project that encourages shops to register with the tourism ministry to promote tourism.

Unbelievable, even for a Tourism Minister.

This guy needs to get out of Government and get on with spending his wife's billions.

Wait...what?

He didn't just say that out loud?

I liked Popkorn so much better. She was just stupid. This guy is beyond stupid. The Italian junket to study late night closing was dumb, but this is a while other level dumb....and sadly given it's in the peanut gallery's interest, it might just get passed.

Ha ha, you seem to have a healthy interest in food there! Popkorn, junket, peanut. I suppose the after effect will be that it will eventually all 'get passed'.

Why not give them an extra 2 weeks ,that would really promote tourism, and inconvenience everyone else.

This beggars belief! Will the money gained by extra tourism revenue (if any) offset the loss in national productivity (if any)?

This goosey gander is a product of a PM choosing his ministry based on return favours rather that intelligence or suitability.

His other masterpiece was getting western foreigners back by promoting massage and ganja.

In the meantime he is going globetrotting at taxpayers expense to learn more about 4 am bar and club closing.

better to send them abroad by thai airways on research trips, all expenses on treasury.

my wife was on a flight to london full of civil servants, who told her the story. That was back in 2013, but surely is going on and it's expected by civil servants to have work bonuses like this

They could probably sack half the officials and the change in national productivity would be close to zero. Same with public servants everywhere.

A great Australian once said 'That the purpose of the civil service is to provide jobs for people who would otherwise be unemployed'.

How many days or months he needed to make such a brilliant idea ?

Fully incorporated into the police, civil service, milatary and parliament etc in Thailand - all unemployable otherwise

There have been quite a few charlatans over the years I have been living here, but this man is definitely up there.

The fact he is the 'Tourism and Sports Minister' is completely ????.

You have to hand it to the tourism minister.  Fantastic poker face - I would not want to play this guy in a hand of Texas.  Doesnt he know... every day is a holiday in the Thai public service.

Ah, some German Autumn beer festival

And exactly HOW does 2 more days off help tourism?  is this a 'populist' measure?  will they 'pretend' to be tourists for 2 days?  Jeeze!

Why not? They 'pretend' to be professional and know what they're talking about.

If Thailand had free speech and and a free press.

A political satirist would have an absolute field day with the idiots who run the country

We do - they just don't understand the subtle humour.

I have a better idea ! Why not release all criminals presently in custody, give them each a million baht, along with the instruction "Don,t spend it, waste it" ????

This minister makes me more and more confused, first proudly announcing that tourism has increased, then he wants to keep the nightlife open until 4am to attract more tourists and for this he wants to make an inspection trip to Italy, now he wants a two-day trip more vacation for government employees to increase tourism!
Do you really want to increase the number of tourists?
1. Eliminate crime (taxi drivers and bus drivers).
2. Convince the central bank to adjust the value of the Baht.
3. Let the tourists not be discriminated.
4. Eliminate many restrictions (drink alcohol during elections or other internal festivities).
5. Eliminate the two-price policy.
Etc. Etc. Etc. Etc.
