Hopefully these Platinum dealers will be around in 3yrs. Most upcountry dealers have gone bust in a year.

I would'nt buy I if they offered a lifetime warranty. They are chinese bags of SH&^%E. You would be better off saving a little bit more and getting a Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki or Kawasaki. You will spend more time in the shop trying to get it fixed than you will riding it. Good luck!!!!!!

Yeah I know what your saying and I think your probably right but it is a nice looking bike, its got a proper chopper shape not like the Boss and Phantom where the tank is too low and the wrong angle, in my opinion they havent made a desent looking small chopper since the Honda Reble, also it was 250cc twin.

I just had some serious engine work done on a 2 year old JRD Surf 125 (wave clone). All the regular bike shops would not touch it and I had to take it to JRD to get the work done. They did a good job and its running well, but it goes to show that if you have any serious problems with a JRD/Platinum/etc, you will need to go to the dealer to get it done. Thus you need to have a dealer to visit, so if you think Platinum are going to go bust, have a good think about it.

On the JRD front, the serious work cost 1400 baht. Considering the bike was 10k cheaper than an equivalent honda (30k versus 40k), if you include the 1400 baht, the JRD has still worked out cheaper than a Honda, with the benefit that most things on the bike can be replaced by a standard Honda part (apart from engine, although some of the engine bits may be Honda copies).

Theres a big difference from JRD and Platinum JRD is engined from india and electrical from malaysia, the platinums electrical systems are from tawain and most of the engine is manufactured in japan.I had a JRD 1 month and sold it and lost 35000bt.I now have 3 platinums and all I can say is there a great bike.I asked the owner from pattaya why have many shops closed he told me the reason was platinum does not have a finance program and as you all know 99% of all thais finance. His customer base are 99% farang not thai and he finances farangs also.

Actually quite happy with the JRD and thought it was a good buy. JRD is a Malaysia company I believe (I have seen ads in Malaysia and they seem to specialise over there in casting alloy wheels for cars, etc). Long term for bikes you have to consider maintenance and sourcing parts, which I believe could be a problem with small companies like JRD/Platinum/etc. I am currently looking for a 2nd hand bike at the moment and am only targeting the main Japanese brands (Honda/Kawasaki/Yamaha/Suzuki); the main reason being there are plenty of these around and getting them maintained by your average bike shop should be a doddle, not to mention getting reasonable priced and easily sourced parts in the future.

Getting a good deal on a new bike seems a problem, since the margins are low, and most of the profit is made from the finance. So being a farang with cash to spend does not really give u any purchasing power. Hence why I am trying to find something secondhand. Also everythign new seems to have a high percentage of plastic, and the only machines that seem durable are the Waves, etc.

Just my opinion and tuppence worth...

I REALLY think that the bottom line is that you get what you pay for. Whatever I buy, I want it to be dependable and and I HATE to have problems regardless of the brand. My last Toyota was a pain in the ass and regardless of what they sell now, I still have a bad taste in my mouth.

What is key is if the above info amounts to reliability comparable to the japanese brands. If so, the 3 year warranty and the big price difference make for a powerful argument in tis favour - leaving only the problem of unfamiliarity of minor repair or servicing by the japanese brand shops.

How long have they been here, and does anyone have long term experience?

Does anyone know if there's a showroom in Korat - or a no/website that will answer the question?

I LIKEN THESE BIKES TO THE BEST LOOKING GIRL IN THE BAR , YOU KNOW THE RIDE WILL BE OK BUT YOULL HATE YOURSELF IN THE MORNING !, THE SAYING " LOOKS GOOD BUT NO GOOD " COMES TO MIND ,.

In the mall this week, we saw a display of JRD bikes, and they featured a 125 scooter for 19,900 baht, also. Their Tornado chopper is about 49,000 fully equipped, roughly half the price of a Honda Phantom 200 similarly equipped, although it's a 150 rather than a 200. My boyfriend said as we walked away, that not only are JRD and Platinum bikes undependable, but even his old Tiger Joker 125 has become undependable since he sold it to his nephew. My Honda keeps rolling along at 42,000 km and I can't remember anything that went wrong (unless it swallowed a choke part once, which is doubtful).

I never notice Platinums; they're nonexistent up north, I guess. JRD's are obvious because of their unique styling, but they're very rare. Even Tigers are few and far between. Even Kawasakis are relatively rare.

I saw a Suzuki V-twin TL1000 yesterday. I'll bet you can get parts and service from any shade tree mechanic (not).

I bought it on 3rd road in pattaya

Do you have the name or specific address location of the dealer or is it with a separate dealer?

Or better yet, a telephone number?

Thank you.
