Thai universities in World University Rankings 2020

 

   

BANGKOK, 19 September 2019 (NNT) - 16 Thai universities are included in World University Rankings 2020 by The Times Higher Education.

 

Mae Fah Luang and Mahidol universities are ranked in the six-hundred-first to eight-hundredth category in the rankings. Out of 1,400 universities across 92 countries, there is a total of 16 universities in Thailand in the rankings.

 

According to the website of Times Higher Education, the rankings are based on 13 criteria which measure teaching, research, knowledge transfer and the international outlook of each educational institution.

 

Among all Thai universities, The Mae Fah Luang University leads in the rankings. It recieves its highest scores in citations and international outlook while Mahidol University recieves its highest scores in industry, income and international outlook.

 

While in ASEAN, Singapore provides two universities of the highest rank: are National University of Singapore, in 25th place and Nanyang Technological University, 48th.

 

As for no.1, the University of Oxford leads the rankings, as it has for 4 consecutive years, followed by the California Institute of Technology and the University of Cambridge.

No, you need to read the OP again.  two Thai universities are in that range (601-800).  16 Thai universities in total were in the rankings, which suggests that the other 14 Thai universities were between 801-1400.

No, apparently, two Thai schools, those named, ranked in the 600 to 800 category. And the remaining 14 presumably ranked lower on the list, somewhere between 800 and 1400.

The Report Card will read "Could do better"   ????

It appears that only 2 universities can claim that distinction:

"Thailand"

"NEXT!"

1 Thai University in between 800 - 1000

Remainder 1000+ (they don't rank after 1000)

 

I guess that Hub of Higher Education thingy probably isn't going to pan out.

The percentage of overseas students is very interesting. We've just been in Edinburgh and Glasgow visiting one of our daughters and the number of Chinese students studying there is massive.

Double edged sword. You get the $ for the education but they'll take everything they learn, including any intellectual property, back to China and use it against in their economic conquest of the world.

I'm afraid that, while Thai university students in general - and frequently lecturers - are often very pleasant and likeable people, their academic /thinking skills (notably amongst the students) is woefully minuscule - shockingly so in many cases. Even many of the lecturers are just repeaters and not at all independent thinkers or questioners (not their fault - when all their formative years were mainly spent in a cultural environment that actively blocks and punishes critical, probing thinking).

 

It's been said before and it bears repeating: Thailand is a nation of imitators, not innovators. Nowhere is this more true than in the field of Thai 'education'.

And Thai people here ask me should my child attend foreign university or Thai university?????? Outside of Thailand who would hire a graduate from a Thai university?

You don't need to be a brain surgeon to understand how awful Thai education is all the way from grade school to University.

 

After we moved from Singapore to Thailand when my son was in middle school, and after witnessed the mind numbingly bad education he got, we were both determined he go to University in the US,

As it happened he ended up at my wife's Alma Mater in Chicago.

 

The problem with University in Thailand is that you could transplant Yale or Stanford into Thailand, but there are dealing with the raw material kicked out of Thai High Schools!

I believe, however, that you pay a very high price for your child in the US, here in Thailand the university is cheaper, and it is clear that the cost is equal to the result, but no one worries  Thailand, it is only important to have a paper diploma to go to work at BIG C

There are 1/3 of a million studying in the U.S. All of the English-speaking nations are popular university destinations. But the Chinese rank the U.S. ones higher than Oxford and Cambridge compared to the British-biased THE. Harvard is the designer name in China, (not Prada or Birkin) followed by all the ones of similar rank such as MIT, though many seem unaware of some of the other Ivies such as Brown or Penn.  Since there are about 60 institutions of higher learning in the Boston area including Harvard and MIT, it's often said in China "Oh, I went college in Boston." (sources: my own observations, and Annie Wang in "The People's Republic of Desire.") And then there are the CCP loyalists who keep tabs on and rat on the democracy-oriented Chinese students, especially in Australia.

Malaysian universities don't belong in any chart or ranking. Students are as restricted in speech as those in China, with the added Muslim interference. And the quality of lecturers is just that--all they do is lecture and learning is, of course, by rote.

Real headline would have read Thailand ranked amongst the worst universities in the world

Only partially correct.US is certainly the primary destination for Chinese students but that's also because the sector is so much larger.Most authorities would not regard the THE as particularly British biased but leaving that aside, the widely accepted QS ranking almost always places Oxford and Cambridge higher than most Ivy League schools.The very top US Universities (Harvard,Stanford,MIT) tend to head the tables though not always -Oxford led this year.The smart upwardly mobile Chinese middle class are not usually fooled by the "I went to College in Boston line."

I have met several Thai graduates, and for some strange reason they have known absolutely nothing. An average European 6 yr old was both more knowledgeable, more intelligent, and more receptive to learning.

How can a Thai adult leave university and, being shown a world map, not even know where America or even Thailand sits in the picture ? The educational system here is such a joke that one wonders if it is intentional.

Any family with money usually sends their kid abroad to study.
