The Ministry for Tourism and Sports is pressing on with plans to allow opening until 4 am for certain tourist areas.

Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said that matters and details were still being discussed but the plan is now to have a pilot scheme in Khao San Road in Bangkok and Pattaya to allow 4 am opening.

The current opening is allowed to just 2 am though this is widely flouted especially in Pattaya, notes Thaivisa.

Phiphat said that state and other agencies need to be consulted before the move is confirmed.

He has said that such a move will boost tourist spending by 25%, reported Nation TV.

But its improvement the law changed. Your right people will lose out on tea money other good news. I guess this government is smarter then the previous ones. Well done good improvement. Seems even this government can have it right once in a while.

*edit*

If I remember correctly 4 was allowed already in the Walking Street and on the Beach Road. I think not many people would have a problem with longer opening times. But with all these many noisy open air bars this creates a problem for very many people. So hopefully better no change in other areas.

Only if the the BIB & Army were warned off by a fusillade of brown envelopes.

I fail to see opening till 4 am will work and increase 25% spending is this TAT estimate? Turn Phuket into a duty free port in the tourism business you have to give the customers what they want if not they will find where it does

And open casino's make them legal

Casinos will stay open 24 hours.

Wow, that only took 5 years of military rule to figure that one out.  Silly junta.

If you want to dramatically move the needle on tourism pump that budget surplus into massive water plant infrastructure! What if Pattaya and Jomtien beach water looked like  Koh Larn! All condos would be full! Easy!!

Globalism is what will destroy countries. When the tide goes down, all ships go down.

Does anyone else spot the contradiction?

If they already stay open especially in Pattaya how is 2 hours extra going to boost profit by 25%

Hasn’t this been tried before?

Why was it changed then ?

Only serious party <deleted> heads will still be drinking at 4 am. Won't affect the majority of tourists but the poor bar girls will have to hang around an extra 2 hours for nothing

Always planning but never a real announcement whenever it comes to good news here. This 4am thing has been dragging on for months and still no concrete announcement! it will be forgotten by tomorrow.

It will continue as it does now in Pattaya in beer bars. bars stay open until the last customer leaves or 4am, whichever is the sooner.

What interests me most about this move/proposal/legislation is that it is a clear recognition that 'traditional' tourism in Thailand i.e. Tourism from the West; USA, Europe, Australia, has been suffering and declining in recent years, and the spending at grass roots level in smaller businesses (independent hotels, bars, local shops etc), which the largest current tourist demographic (which has been pandered to for too long IMO) doesn't seem to do, has been missed and is causing problems in the economy of Thailand.

I know such a move will upset the puritanical among us,  however making Thailand seen as a 'World Class Party Destination' once again - a tag it has lost in recent years - is no bad move.

While only a tiny step in the right direction, the implications could be much bigger. Who knows? Maybe they might even give the Baht a tweak too?

While they are at it, they could lift the archaic  'no alcohol' on holy days or around elections laws and restrictions in tourist areas too.  Nice to see a positive move by the Powers that Be.

I suppose that means the bars I see open and serving alcohol at 8 a.m., during my morning walk in Pattaya, will now have to close at 4 am?

"Laws and more laws. As plentiful as the polluted air. The irony of it all, is that no one cares".

Only for foreigners if they operate casinos in Thailand.

Is there an actual law that dictates the earliest time that a bar can open?

Could a bar close at 4AM and then open at 4:01 ?

Fewer brown envelopes required to stay open?

I need to invest in a wheel barrow making factory, not a bar for sure.

God knows how they come up with these figures. How will an extra 2 hours, at a time when 75% of punters will already be drunk and asleep, or at home with their new girlfriend, boost profits by 25%? They need new batteries in their little handheld calculator I think. Maybe they outsourced their calculations to the TAT?

Meantime in Chiang Mai, midnight curfew for all ????

No it will not give Thailand a tourist boost. Only more drunk people out in the streets.
The tourist numbers are going down every year and we all know why.
