Deputy government spokesperson Traisulee Traisoranakul said today the Cabinet will launch a Bt116-million tourism stimulus package to further promote the “Eat, Shop, Spend” campaign.

"It consists of two measures. Under the first, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will collaborate with operators of hotels, spas, and entertainment venues in promoting the sales of 40,000 domestic tour packages, priced at Bt100 each”, she said.

“This measure, running from October to December 2019, has been allocated Bt63.5 million in funding, ” she added.

Consumers can register for this scheme to shop online at participating partners via TAT’s official Line account. Purchase is limited to one package per buyer.

“It is targeted at Generation X and Y consumers with moderate purchasing power. The promotion will be held on 'catchy' dates, such as October 10 (10-10), November 11 (11-11), and December 12 (12-12)”, said Traisulee.

The second measure involves launching a project to boost travellers’ spending, in which TAT and private partners will offer 70 per cent discounts on luxury products and services at participating hotels, shopping malls, spas, hospitals, restaurants, jewellery stores, and amusement parks on weekdays.

“Promotional activities will be launched on mini websites and mobile platforms, backed by Bt52.5 million in funding,” she said.

TAT has told the Cabinet that these measures would stimulate Thai tourism in view of a economic recession and continuous strengthening of the baht as well as keeping Thailand as one of the six countries earning the most from tourism.

The measures are expected to increase tourism revenue by 10 per cent to a total of Bt3.3 trillion this year.

For this campaign to be a success they will need to change the slogan to :

' Borrow more , eat shop , spend '

The strong baht is weakening exports and poor factory workers are either tightening their belts or losing their jobs so the government strategy is to get them to blow their meager savings on a bender.

Could any more happiness be returned to the people. Not by this crowd.

Foreign tourists, you are excluded from this promo, it is only for Thais. Keep away we are doing very nicely by ourselves thank you.

We don't need you. Anyway you make much trouble because you cannot speak Thai and your money no good anymore.

Thai tourists and Thai baht are best.

Looks like they had to come up with a better thought out local-tourism-boosting scheme, as the 1,000 baht e-voucher just gave people the opportunity to do their normal shopping at BigC in the next province for free.....

Chiang Mai residents have cottoned onto the fact that they can register and then go and spend 1,000 Bt in neighbouring Lamphun province. All in less than a day.

They should make recipients of the 1000 fill in a special Thai TM30 to boost employment for government officials.

Tesco Lotus, Prachachuen has set up a dedicated line for the voucher shoppers! It's a heck of a drive from Nonthaburi to Prachachuen!

And, because of this loophole, the vouchers are gone in a very short window following midnight.

It didn't take long for such comments to bubble forth from the lower depths.

"Sex" and beauty sells - and there are few countries that leverage sexuality more better than Thailand.

Perhaps none do, actually.
