Two underage girls saved from human trafficking karaoke bar

Police raided a karaoke bar on Bangkok’s Thaniya Road on Tuesday and rescued two 17-year-old girls working in the sex trade.

Acting on a tip off that the karaoke joint was being used for human trafficking, Superintendent Pol Col Douangchote Suwanjalask and his deputy, Pol.Lt.Col. Satit Sorncha of Bang Rak police station led the raid as part of the government’s “Prevention and Suppression of Human Trafficking” policy.

There, they found Janrija Saisaeng welcoming customers to the third floor, which was serving as a brothel. Two of the girls were identified as underage, leading to the arrest of Janjira and the building owner, Thanapat Paladechanun.

Thanapat later admitted that the two 17 year-olds were employees of the bar and serviced regular customers. They received salaries of Bt8,000 and Bt200-300 more for “entertaining” customers. Clients paid them out of their own pockets if they took the girls out for sex, paying the bar a buy-out fee of Bt700.

The police charged Janjira and Thanapat with human trafficking and the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security will assign psychiatrists to take care of the two victims.

What will they do with the University girls earning sex money to pay the uni fees?

When do they start to put in jail the families that usually send the daughters to work?? This is thai culture, do you know ????

Why do so many countries conform to American standards of morality. 16 is a much more realistic age, particularly as girls are maturing at earlier ages now than in the past.

''A study by Dr. Marcia Herman-Giddens found that in 1860, the average age of the onset of puberty in girls was 16.6 years. In 1920, it was 14.6; in 1950, 13.1; 1980, 12.5; and in 2010, it had dropped to 10.5. Similar sets of figures have been reported for boys, albeit with a delay of around a year.''

Most of them are over 20 years old;
they do what they want with their bodies.
the police can not say anything unless they catches them in the act

It seems normally nobody cares about American standards in Thailand. Until the moment some NGOs make a big fuss or maybe some important US visitor and there has to be some raid before that to show everybody that Thailand enforces the laws.

And in a few months when the little tykes reach 18?  They will be declared cured and devoid of any psychosis from their obvious mental trauma?  Is the Karaoke holding their jobs for them?

Get rid of these criminals! There are plenty of attractive ladies over 20 years old available in Thailand. No need for underage or human trafficking.

I doubt that there is a single developed country in the world who permit prostitution

under the age of 18, certainly none of the more liberal northern European nations.

Having a sexual relationship with girls over 16 is generally accepted in most countries,

although eyebrows would be raised if there was a large age difference between the couple.

It isn't the physical development which is in question, rather the mental ability to make

such a decision.

In other words, pimps.

You think 18 to old for this law. You not agree the law.

How old you think someone can be to be sex worker?  16? 14? 12?

Yes exactly.

Some people have very odd opinions on this. And where do you draw the line?

Nigeria is age 11 probably those that think it is all OK.

Seems sick and disgusting to me probably have frontal lobe issues...

Unfortunately the demand will always be there, and there is no lack of supply in Thailand

I think it's more difficult than that.

a) Some girls know what they are doing and they are willing to prostitute themselves i.e. to buy the newest mobile phone.

b) Some girls are willing to go with some guys but they wouldn't go with everyone. Depending on the bar that is ok or not.

c) Some girls are forced to do what they do by their family, mostly older sisters or the mother.

d) Some girls are sold into that market. They are not asked if they want to do what they do and they would be punished if they would try to get away.

Personally I think version a and b are more or less acceptable when the girls are old enough to have sex. In many cases that's probably around 16 years old. Girls shouldn't be encouraged to find a job like that. But if they absolutely want to do it they will do it anyhow - legal or not.

And for the girls which are pushed into that business by their family or criminals those who are responsible should be punished. That means i.e. the mother who demands more and more money from her daughter - knowing exactly what the daughter has to do to make that money.

But there is of course also the big problem with social services in Thailand. Let's say there is a 16 year old girl and her family forces her into that business. And let's say the girl is arrested and she tells them her parents sold her. And then let's assume the parents are arrested. And then? What will happen to the girl? I don't know what will happen to her but I am pretty sure she won't have a happy home after that. And then? Sometimes there are no easy answers.

They will be asking for a bus ticket to Pattaya.

I knew a girl who got kicked out of her home by her father go and find a farang and get money, she never went back home and she didn't go on the game.

I don't understand why people are mocking the story. I didn't even know people had sex in Thailand.

Trafficked.

By getting on a bus to the capital, then selling themselves.

Two underage girls saved...

Could it be that the two 17 year old girls actually works there freely to earn some easy money... ????

–however, still illegal after the law, but I often wonder about the words "saved" and "rescued" in articles are about almost 18 year old girls.

They were working as service staff. The headline should read: 'teenage girls kidnapped from work by armed thugs'...The were NOT rescued and they were NOT Trafficked but they were and still are victims of police interference, who probably had not been paid offf...hence the raid. A young adult decided she did not want to a poverty stricken rice farmer and used her initiative to better herself. No she's stuck in the patriarchal penal sytem known for its hideous conditions and abuse. Disgraceful.
