lets face it

many here gripe about Chinese & INdian tourism mainly Chinese at the moment

They say there is already too many tourists and the next estimate of 41 mill is horrendous

The world has changed you had Thailand for oh so long and perhaps lived a good life

Thailand is hoping it can keep the wave of Chinese coming

but what does a Chinese tourist want

It likes that conveyor belt system of say the White Temple in Chiang Rai

in out onto the next thing

41 million is nothing

Spain topped out at 82 millionlast year

Thaialnd is on Chinas doorstep

China has a population greater than the USA

and just as many if not more than all the EU nations together

India thankfully is still a craphole

You cant blame Thailand for milking it while it can

Just a few years ago Prayut and Co said tourism was only 12% of GDP and not so important

they denied the soft GDP part sex tourism etc

but China is a fickle mistress

so we wait and see and I guess we will have to wait till the first HSR link is established to see what the future holds

Thailand is developing in a way that no one here really wants thats life your mostly all old ernough to know that and that would also explain why you moan so much

They are using our building as a hotel now and are arriving in small groups. The complex is all over the hotel sites including Airbnb. I watched the front desk lady give out keys to the mail boxes. I wonder who is cleaning the rooms. Lol

Got nothing against the Chinese people per-say.  Don’t care for the hordes and hordes of them clogging up airports and the best sites.

Of course here in Isaan—we don’t seem to draw as many of them ????.  Down on the Gulf we tend to steer clear...

Don't think anyone here cares about them much.

We mostly make fun of TAT and Gov and the bs they try to sell us....

Yes,and the number 40 million in total is at least 30% to much. TAT is always lying about numbers. That includes tourism from China and India, and don't forget they normally enters on VOA.

A good tourism is a mixed tourism as it was some years ago here in Thailand, fixing on Chinese and Indians can not be good for the economy!

I agree but Chinas numbers are always going to seem overwhelming
Currently they make a third of the numbers from being virtually non existant say 5 years ago
& the inherent difference is tour groups
In the past the majority of travellers would have independent.
Now its Tour coaches and the bloody convoy of Tuk Tuks here in CM
but again Thailand over estimates itself
there has been a major refurb of hotels in CM and YES they are nice but its a big over estimation of what people will pay
and it alraedy has an impact with poor numbers this year

most crowded beach video

chinese beaches

Careful what you wish for Thailand maybe Pattaya of the future

but at least they closed of the beach

i guess the mainland is another thing though and the reality is that this chinese beaches is the future vision of Pattaya

that would certainly throw shade on the money that girlie bars brings in

high speed rail link kunming to Bangkok

embrace it or get appropriate medication so everything becomes a fuzzy bundle of fun be it bottle, bong or capsule form

The reason they close beaches here and there in Thailand because of tourists, that will prevent the chinese beach syndrom to happen. So just sit tight and relax.

Plenty of Chinese on the tour buses in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. The regimented holiday.

I somehow doubt they are providing a boost to tourist income. Their main focus seems to be beating the locals down on price.

as do the Thai and Europeans, don't they ?
first thing a Thai asks on the phone when calling about prices,
how much you give discount ?

(by the way, as I remember Europeans used to be told to target 60 % of asking price or less when going shopping while traveling in Asia or Africa.)

2 years and 4 months
travelled extensively
over the last few years there have been movements to try clean up India

more

and in the last ten years possibly a total of 5 years
its a love hate thing
but you cannot deny the deprivation and poverty that still exists
to read a newspaper that has a different rape on each page
With garbage its a caste thing and inthat everyone produces it but some cannot be seen to be touching

A spade is a spade I just hate the denial know its there know it happens understand the why
As a foreigner our input is not really accepted I tried on a small scale and once again its a caste based thing.
To go to Dharma sala and see them just tipping garbage over the edge of the road also displays just how the Dali Lhama gets involved (or rather doesnt) in his surroundings

india times

but some are trying waste warriors

An rise in income relates d masses accesto an expotential increase in purchasing
purchasing items that come in non recyclable packages
unlike the India of old were most items were sold loose wrapped in newspaper and string

pan masala was never purchased as it is now the same for chewing tobacco

Yet the garbage collection system did not keep up with manufacturing changes or income and purchase rises
It as not even thought about
In many rural and even town areas the evening burn is a common site
even when there may be a street cleaner coming down the street idiots will still set fire to their pile
(others have said the same of Thailand) its an educational thing its people set in their ways

The other thing is Internet giving  the uneducated masses access to hard core porn results in related sex crime increases, Pornography has been well cited in crimes in USA EU Nations etc so India should be no different except the impact should be greater a group of men huddled round 'gang bang' vidoes
its the favourite sex search in India.
& the most reported crime is gang rape

I am certainly not saying anything new Im just not denyying its there

My prognosis is there will be USA-Vietnam Second war in 5 years or so. American soldiers will need a place to relax again and what other place if not Pattaya will do the task? Chinese, Indians and russians - everybody will just disappear. Everything will become as it was some 50 years ago. Even the prices (with inflation considered). Going back in times is really possible. No, Chinese are not here to stay! Americans are going to be back and take us all 50 years back in time.

The OP makes some good valid points in his posts, however I'd like to throw in a few factors he hasn't seemed to have considered.

1) Over the (too) many years I've been travelling to Thailand, and Pattaya, it seems that since the 1990s, it has been mooted that 'traditional' tourism i.e. Western tourism (from Europe, the USA, Australia, NZ etc) will be overtaken by a 'new wave' of tourism from another sector. It was always Japan in the early days yet that never seemed to materialise, then it was Hong Kong, then internal Thai and SEAsian, then Russia, then Korea/Japan, then India, and now China, though the remaining constant  factor throughout all this time has been the aforementioned 'traditional' tourism. It has been noticeable that due to many factors (the main being the strong Baht)  this sector has fallen away compared to Indian and Chinese tourism. However there have been clear signals in recent times that the authorities are aware that the macroeconomics from tourism have been affected by the spending habits of the latter sectors.

2) The 'fashion' factor. Thailand won't always be top of everyone's list. Indeed it was very out of fashion in the West for a period, when it was seen as 'done', in the sense that every man and his dog had been to Thailand. There was a surge in tourism from Japan and Korea in the mid 2000s, which also fell away sharply when Thailand became less fashionable a destination in those countries.

What the future holds, no one knows but looking at past models, I'd say the 'cycle' will continue, with Western tourism dominating once more if and when the Baht 'crashes'.

i wouldnt say India is a craphole at all, far from it.

I rather like India, a lot more civil and free to move around than in China with people genuinely curious and happy to engage and openly friendly with very varied thoughts rather than state brainwashed. The food is fantastic and varied, its got a lot more and intact ancient history, art and buildings than China too, far more religious depth, variation and culture, Oh and its the worlds largest democracy so theres that too. And it has the original Enlightened one, Buddha. Taoism and Confucianism are based on Buddhism. In fact i find India most superior to China in almost every way tbh. Nope I wouldnt run down India at all.

I can honestly say we enjoyed Thailand in its best and freer times in the reign of Rama 9, before all people cared about was money, before tech made everything too easy and commercial, when a genuine adventure could be had, people genuinely smiled for the good feeling of it, diving was good and before things became too polluted, overpriced and uncared for. Thailand if its smart will stop selling itself to China, unfortunately thats not likely and Thailand is no longer innocent and the gem it once was.

China is no doubt going to dominate the region and the likes of Thailand, that dosnt mean its a good thing for the Thai people though but thats upto them, we had the good years when it was really fun and free. Ill be happy not to see the result of 82m + Chinese tourists a year thanks...

I tend to agree with you about the differences between Indian and Chinese tourists. China is a non differentiated homogeneous society but India is a fairly wild heterogeneous society.  The way the Chinese swarm in hordes is very off putting and can not be good for broad based tourism in the long run. Slightly off topic but at the top of cozy beach road, where dozens of chinese tour buses park in the recently developed parking area to serve big buddha temple...there are political posters very critical of the Chinese dictatorship.  They are posters depicting political prisoners, especially falon gong, having there organs removed to be harvested as donors and transplants. The donors are not unconscious. The poster are pretty graphic ....has anybody seen them?

I went for an evening to niagra falls, the main tourist demographic was Chinese, and Indian, I would have never expected the amount of Indians I saw, the Chinese I expected.

and no, there were no flag waving leaders or buses parked along the road.

families, well dressed, smiling,,polite, enjoying themselves.

and when I went for an overpriced beer at the local craft beer bar, guess who was beside me enjoying their evening????????

yes things are changing.

pattaya is a low class destination that attracts low class people( mainly) from expats, retirees, to Chinese and Indians.

the tourist etc in pattaya is not typical of other destinations .
