What happens to gambling addicted people if they can't gamble? Do they die? Does it hurt? And if yes, for how long?

I understand that some people like gambling and some like it a lot. But I am confused by this "addiction". They won't die if they don't gable.

Do smokers die if they stop smoking ? They don't, same as most drug addicts. They suffer physical and mental pain. For the gamblers it might not be physical but for sure mental pain. As many addictions, this is controlled by the brain and if you want, a mental disease.

I remember in the early 70's while serving in Hong Kong, Chinese also used to gamble on Mahjong , saw chap throw himself off the 20th floor because he had lost everything, including his wife and house, not that is serious . So it is not just Thais Asian countries attract more gamblers it seems, maybe it is to do with quality of life I haver no idea

I think the main reason why gambling is still illegal in Thailand is that if it was allowed the corruption/graft/money laundering etc etc would be so great it would be out of control.

Big men would influence the outcome of everything therefore it's hardly gambling.

Apart from a percentage of Thais losing everything you also have the flip side of others gaining winnings..

addiction as in all other aspects of life comes down to ones own self-control, like drink or drugs.

So that's why we have back room cards or friends gathering at home to satisfy the need.

So that is why the Chinese are building many more casinos across the border in Poi-Pet. On a recent visit to Cambodia, it was incredible to see the massive foundations being dug. There is no local airport for Chinese Airlines to fly in punters, and I was informed that Thai gamblers are the intended customers. Evidently at weekends, the car parks on the Thai side at Aranyaphratet, are totally packed - avoid like the plague!! Another Chinese Special Economic Zone in the making??

It's a big problem in Laos as well. My friend's wife gambled away his house. They're still together which I find shocking.

My wife used to play with her friends. Very low stakes, a great day or bad day would equal maybe + / - $5.00.

I morning I woke up at around 2 am and she still wasn't home. I went to find her and brought her home with the admonition: It's me, your house and life OR the game. Choose...now!

She chose smartly. She knows too many who last too much.

I just don’t understand why people don’t gamble on the stock market instead of betting on games where the odds are deliberately stacked against them, especially now that computer trading has greatly reduced brokerage costs, meaning that it’s now possible to gamble quite small amounts of money. You can still lose of course, but despite the occasional bit of insider trading, the odds are so much more in your favour, and watching the price of your stocks rising and falling from day to day could be just as exciting as other forms of gambling.

Gambling in the dirt with hastily set up Hi-Lo "casinos" is rife in the villages of Issan. Often at funeral parties you will see several different games on the go. Then there are the behind closed doors games too. The police may occasionally do a raid, but the players scatter. Don't mock the label addiction, it is just that. Addicts play until everything is lost and will do it again, and again. The belief in a big win on the next throw is unshakeable. The buzz is like a drug. Of course someone is making big money in these dirt poor communities. That it is illegal certainly adds a frisson.

Also been impacted by gambling addict here, combined with loans from friends and sharks both with high monthly interest made it hell.

Borrow money to pay the debt, not able to borrow enough so gambling what someone gave you to get out of debt to get more seems like the only option 'in a gamblers head' and quickly have nothing and people threatening family members and so called friends taking your kids toys as collateral.

Interestingly they did not seem to provide contact number for assistance for both the gambling and the debts, they could in my view set these up in every 7/11 just to cater for the extent of the problem they have in Thailand on this front.

When pretty much everyone knows someone with a problem with gambling or debt its clearly a bigger problem than they are making out and these people and their families need help.

No need to provide support for gamblers since it's illegal. ????

If you are not addicted to anything  then it is unlikely that you can understand the concept. Dying is not an end point in all addictions. However, loosing family, friends, money, home, job, car, health, sanity and more is possible. Perhaps doing some research will enlighten you about the various forms of addiction, including TVF.

Looks like time to bust the evil farang bridge clubs.

Get your automatic weapons ready boys and your flack jacket and let's rain those joints. While we are at it we can get those bars who don't have their darts boards registered.

Strangely enough-it's not only "Bridge" clubs.

Up my way-under a big old tree near the temple-there used to be a dominoes club.Even I went there for a bit of fun, practice my Thai and put down 20 baht or so and outside the local mom'n pop store was a couple of chequers/draughts tables where a few guys would gather for a beer and a game-it was part of the local culture.

Alas, long gone-the old folks were rounded up and fined (with a vengeance)-no fun at all to be had in the Land of the Cromwellian Snarl.

Using that logic, doctors in the UK shouldn't be providing methadone to heroin addicts because heroin is illegal.

In Canada we provide them with safe injection site. It does help.
