The Thai Health Promotion Foundation, the Centre for Gambling Studies, Stop Gambling Foundation and related associations held a meeting on Monday to discuss the gambling situation in the country in 2019 as a report showed that a whopping 30.42 million Thais, or 57 per cent of the population, gamble.

Dr Nualnoi Trirat, director-general of the Centre for Gambling Studies, Faculty of Economics at Chulalongkorn University, shared the report by the Research Centre for Social and Business Development based on data collected from a survey of 44,050 people aged over 15 across 77 provinces.

The report said the figure of 30.42 million this year is an increase of 1.49 million from 2017 and includes 700,000 new gamblers. The majority of gamblers are of working age.

However, youth aged 15-18, or 733,000 young gamblers, are causing the most concern. This group is 20.9 per cent of the youth population. Meanwhile, 3.05 million, or 46.3 per cent of young adults aged 19-25, are also known to bet. The senior group – aged 60 and above – are also a cause for worry as around 3.35 million, or 42.2 per cent of the senior population, love to gamble.

The report said that the youngest gambler is seven years old.

Government lottery, illegal lottery, betting on cards, football gambling, and the Higher or Lower card game are the top five gambling addictions. Football gambling makes the most money – Bt160.5 billion – followed by illegal lottery – Bt153.1 billion – and government lottery – Bt150.4 billion.

Thai Health CEO Supreda Adulyanon said the World Health Organisation has classified gambling addiction as a psychiatric illness, which is in a group of disorders related to mental health, behaviour and neurological development. Many who are unable to stop the addiction tend to have lifelong problems, including mental and physical health complications, family debt, violence, or crime.

I knew a British guy whose Thai wife gambled away over 10 million baht while he was away on business. Some stupid card came similar to hearts.

The game they waste their money on around is here is a kind of baccarat, with huge payouts for certain combinations of cards which makes them want to keep playing forever because it's so addictive.

Ive seen many things go here through gambling, cars, trucks, property and serious money

What happens to gambling addicted people if they can't gamble? Do they die? Does it hurt? And if yes, for how long?

I understand that some people like gambling and some like it a lot. But I am confused by this "addiction". They won't die if they don't gable.

I'm sure much of the lure here is the taboo factor. I've known Thais get all giddy over the prospect of playing a friendly game of cards behind closed doors.

we set the wifes mother up in her own business based at home, we never made her pay anything towards the house bills or food etc, she was making pretty good money too and she ended up losing everything through gambling after she went away to visit old friends and didnt return. Some people just cant help themselves, wife took her in originally after she lost everything gambling many years ago, even after such a long time(almost 20 years) without it she couldnt help herself when she mixed back with her old friends and blew it all, we dont even know where she is now.

I guess that brings some excitement in their life. It's almost like Russian roulette.

Apparently the addiction to gambling is a real thing, although most people control the addiction by "investing" little sums in it.

Many lives get ruined, but we don't get to hear about it.

I would argue the headline is wrong. I would hazard a guess most Thais are up to their necks in debt and are desperate for a way, anyway to get themselves out of debt.

Obviously gambling is not the answer but they have very few options.

Gambling problems seem common in many Asian countries. If you go to a casino in the UK for instance they're usually packed with orientals. It used to be opium which is obviously now banned, plus alcohol doesn't agree with them, so gambling is the next best thing I suppose, preferably done whilst chain smoking. If you go to Genting Highlands or Marina Bay Sands you can see them all there furiously chucking their money away, you'll hear many people speaking in Thai.

Dont forget the Stock Market many do that

in my opinion, people get addicted to doing things because they are unhappy with life.  smoking, drinking, drugs, gambling, etc.  are addictions people engage in because they are unhappy for whatever reason.  that said, one needs to analyze why they are unhappy before they can resolve the addiction.  confusion with life in general, broken hearts, peer pressure, keeping up with the joneses... is what ruins peoples lifes.  buddha.. the more you want, the more you suffer.  the more you have, the more you worry.

Besides becoming an Addiction People have an Thinking That Gambling is The Most Easy & Convenient Way Of Making Money In Minutes Without Working Hard But In The end Gamblers Loose Their Hard Earned Money In Minutes, Bookies Are The Real Winners In The End

It has been Horned Beetle time up in the northern area. Just had one in my yard that escaped with its wings rubbed off. Felt so sad for it.

Looks like time to bust the evil farang bridge clubs.

Get your automatic weapons ready boys and your flack jacket and let's rain those joints. While we are at it we can get those bars who don't have their darts boards registered.

It is called Pan 9 or super 9 in the USA Los Angeles Casinos such as the Commerce or the old Hollywood Park which used to run a very big game in the high roller room called the Golden Horse.

They certainly give those very few options a go though.

Gambling is illegal in Thailand so Thai are protected from themselves. It works like with drug, alcool sell ban in the afternoon, prostitution, etc.

Whist gambling may be illegal in Thailand-Thais are certainly not protected from themselves. They are insane gamblers and it would be probably more effective to legalize (and tax) the lot.
