BANGKOK(NNT) - The Environmental Justice Foundation’s Executive Director has met with the Deputy Prime Minister, praising Thailand as the first country in the region to have successfully overcome illegal, unregulated, unreported (IUU) fishing.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan, today welcomed the Environmental Justice Foundation’s (EJF) Executive Director, Mr. Steve Trent, to the Ministry of Defence in Bangkok.

The Deputy Prime Minister’s Assistant Spokesman Maj Gen Patchasak Patirupanon, disclosed that Gen Prawit Wongsuwan had thanked Mr Trent for the organization’s offer to help Thailand solve the problem of IUU fishing, which helped the country achieve the lifting of the yellow-flag warning over a 4-5 year period. The DPM assured the Foundation’s Executive Director, that the government will continue to suppress IUU fishing, keeping the country IUU Free, and has asked the EJF to help assist the Thai government in addressing issues in the fisheries’ labor sector.

The UK-based nonprofit’s director thanked the DPM for the welcome from Thai authorities, and praised Thailand’s successful efforts in combating IUU fishing, being the first country in the region to achieve this goal and becoming a model for other countries around the world. He asked the Thai government to maintain its focus on solving issues in the fishing industry and promoting sustainability, adding that the EJF is willing to provide support and guidance.

This has been a very legitimate success for Thailand, albeit responding to international pressure and threats of economic disruption. One need only hear the recent complaints from Thai fishing vessel owners about the new and enforced restrictions on their sea harvesting operations to see how effective the government has been.

Even with generous government financial support, Thai fishing vessel owners continue to demand exemption from IUU laws and regulations. Thus far, the government has remained steadfast to the rule of law for IUU. Foreign recognition of Thailand's success in ports and at sea for IUU compliance is important for the nation to maintain it enforcement efforts.

Quote

The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) founded in 2001 by Steve Trent and Juliette Williams that promotes the non-violent resolution of human rights abuses and related environmental issues in the Global South. It describes itself as "a UK-based non-profit organisation working internationally to protect the environment and human rights."[1]

Must be the final authority in IUU matters then. Never mind EU or some such.

The decrepit looking Prawit is obviously well past his use-by-date, if he ever had one.

There are many in the Prayut Chan-o-cha government who are an embarrassment to the country and utter failures but none so greater than this bozo.

How can you overcome something that's not reported? So many Generals too...the assistant spokesman is a Major General. Is the spokesman a Lieutenant General? The DPM is a full General, what would that make the PM, a Field Marshal?
