How to "grid" a photo and make a painting?

Below is a photo Id like to copy with paint on A large canvas.

 

I'd like to transfer the basic shape using a grid.

 

If anyone's feeling particularly smart could I make a finer scale grid around the walking figure......like a grid inside one of the square or rectangles the main grid?

 

Can anyone suggest a clever way to do this?

how many grids wide do you want it to be top left corner to top right corner.

How many grids wide to you want the secondary grid?

How many grids do you want in the secondary grid?

 

 

Do you just want the grids to be superimposed on the picture?

What colour do you want the grid lines to be?

Do the grid lines have to be a particular thickness or just generally thin?

Hi Andy youre really on the case already.

 

I've gone to the Art Tutor site you used but frankly what you have drawn is just fine.

I think I prefer the second with a 10 x 6 grid and approx 5 x 5 for the green grid looks good.

 

Thoughts:

I think I would like to bring the painting to the edges of the canvas rather than have a white border , but notice your gridlines come past the edge.

I have a canvas pretty close to the proportions of the photo, so will probably just have to crop or extend the photo image left and right as necessary.

 

 

in fact I just measure the canvas its 150 x 80cm......L/W 1.875

I now just measured the photo on the screen .......16cm x 9.8cm..... L/W approx 1.6

This means the canvas is clearly a wider proportion than the photo.

I could just add black to the left and right to righten the proportion.

Or I think it would look OK if I cropped the bottom a bit.

Cropping the top would lose a bit of the action, the winding track.

 

I've just cropped a tiny bit at top and more at the bottom and the resulting proportions pretty much fit the canvas yet the change doesn't detract from the image I think......maybe even an improvement. See below.

Chores to do will be back to work outlaying the grid on the canvas

It would be great to have a grid with a whole number of vertical lines starting and finishing on the L and R sides exactly.

I realise the horizontal lines cannot be a whole number with this canvas but would be nice to have squares and the first gridline concurrent with the top or bottom

i never gave it a border the web site did

 

 

i think working from the screen may be difficult

 

better you print it of

 

so your canvas is 150x80

 

find your centre with diagonals

next draw a line vertical and horizontal  now you have 4 squares

 

in your case a subdivision by 10 is appropriate

but you must choose vertical size or horizontal size squares so that is 7.5cm or 8cm

75cm either side of your vertical as your divisions by 10 

 

now a print of can be treated the same way 

find the centre

take the size of the print divide by 10 draw your squares 

its all in the arithmetic

 

the site i used does not really do what you require

your picture and canvas dont have a common denominator that is why i use 10
so you have to choose 7,5cm squares or 8 cm squares the horizontal sizes versus vertical

 

but whichever you choose the same formula must be applied to the photo

 

does that make sense?

I believe black and white prints are just 2 or 3 baht but how much are colour?

i think ive over thought the arithmetic

 

i already said divide canvas into 4 and replicate on your print out 

throw away the arithmetic

just keep sub dividing the rectangles from 4 to 16 

 

then work from there where you require more detail

Raserbator is free to use, but a bit heavy on ink if you do wall size images

I don’t have a printer....... I would have to go to a print shop.
Do you think they might be across about me using so much ink? :)
Maybe don’t show them what they’re printing til it’s done!!

As you said earlier if the cost of color is 2 or 3 baht, possibly b/w will be cheaper so you will know the total cost depending on the number of sheets you have.

 

Probably be cheaper on plain paper rather than quality photo paper.

You could always just get it printed and draw grid directly on the print. My brother did murals and regular paintings using this method. Quite often just a photograph with lines across it.

Whoops I was thinking black and white costs 2 or 3 baht but colour a lot dearer.
Wondering what the cost might be for like half a wall.
Could look damn good slapped on with wallpaper paste......Doesn’t have to be rectangular either either, the individual A4s could be cut on a curve to make a bigger curve overall

Took the bottom row off the grid, made a blonde with the small grid but fixed it. Ive more or less completed it but will touch up next
