Riau
Hello, This is what did happen to one of my colleagues at work. He used to work for a company on a Non-B and WP. When he quit his job, he got his WP cancelled but didn't cancel his Non-B, on which he stayed in Thailand for several months before going back home. He got a TV before coming back to Thailand, and went to the same Immigration Office where he had made a 1-year extension of his last Non-B to try to convert his TV into a Non-B but in vain. What the IO told him was they couldn't do that with his passport. He ended up having to go back home to get a new passport and came back to Thailand 3 weeks later. No wonder he took a pay cut for the 3 weeks and had to pay for his return ticket to fly back home on his own.
overherebc
If you have an extension of stay from your B visa then yes you should cancel it. If you still have the B visa then you don't need to cancel it as most likely it will be a single entry so flying out means it's finished. If you changed to an extension and you fly out without a re-entry permit then your extension will be finished and the best you will get is 30 days visa exempt. So, I'm confused about the must get a new passport thing. You can't get a B visa in Thailand except maybe if you start work for a BOI Company. I reckon your 'friend' misunderstood the IO when he handed back the passport and said something on the lines of 'this no good, cannot' so in reality he just wasted money on the flight and getting a new passport. Yes, as often happens in stories about the experiences of friends, mixing extensions of stays and visa types creates stories that make little sense and, rather than passing on useful advice, just muddy the waters. I go for he had an extension he didn't cancel, didn't have a re-entry permit so came back on VE or SETV and not knowing the difference thought he could get that changed back to a B extension he'd lost. OI said something on the lines of 'this cannot' and he assumexd his passport was no good??? so he wasted time, money and maybe a perfectly good passport. He said that the IO wouldn't convert his TV into a 3-month Non-B with the same passport because he didn't cancel a 1-year extension of his last Non-B before he left Thailand.
