Police in Chiang Mai have been investigating hazing at the Mae Jo university.

After a parent of a student who was assaulted with a three sided stick went to police in early October more details have emerged of hazing rituals at the university.

Hazing is the tradition of elder students "welcoming" new students with various activities. These sometimes turn violent and are intended to humiliate the new arrivals.

The parent of a young man called "Folk" went to the police after seeing pictures of their son who was a first year student in the fisheries faculty.

The hazing event was entitled "Seven Dangerous Days" but went on well after that - it happened every week, they claimed.

Police have criticised the university staff for dragging their heels in investigating the matter.

Students were told not to reveal details of what happened to them. But some could not keep it quiet.

A social media campaign followed when justice from both the police and university officials was not forthcoming.

Now the police have demanded the names of ten students involved in the assaults and are issuing summonses for them to appear for questioning.

Mae Jo University - one of the leading educational establishments in the north of Thailand - has said that the rituals took place off campus and could not be controlled.
