Ban of 3 substances will cripple sugar industry: expert

Dr Kitti Chunhawong, president of Thailand Society of Sugarcane Technologists (TSSCT) insisted on Tuesday (November 12) that the banning of 3 agrochemical substances namely Paraquat, Chlorpyrifos and Glyphosate by the Hazardous Substance Committee, which came into effect last month, will severely affect the sugar industry.

 

“Currently Thailand is world’s 5th sugar producer and 2nd biggest exporter with more than 11 million rai of sugarcane plantation areas and 134 million tonnes of sugarcane produced per year,” he said. “The ban of these 3 substances, especially Paraquat, will affect the sugar production in 2020 as well as other related industries such as food processing, animal feed, ethanol manufacturing and biomass power plants.”

 

Kitti further explained that based on preliminary estimates, the sugarcane production will decrease 20-50 per cent if Paraquat is not used, causing 67 million tonnes of sugarcane to disappear from the market annually and costing the farmers at least Bt50 billion in income. “Biomass power plants will also lose approximately Bt7.4 billion due to the disappearance of 11 million tonnes of sugarcane leaves that are used to make biomass fuel,” he added.

 

Meanwhile, the sugar industry will suffer from reduced production of 6.7 million tonnes of raw sugar annually valued at Bt47 billion, while molasses production will go down by 3.3 million tonnes annually, valued at Bt10 billion. “The ethanol industry will also take a hit, with 840 million litres and Bt18 billion missing,” said Kitti.

 

“The government must urgently help the sugarcane farmers by supporting production factors, which include weed killers, fertilisers and harvesting machines, as the ban of Paraquat will drive the production cost up even further,” he said. “Alternately, we urge the government to reconsider the Hazardous Substance Committee’s decision to ban Paraquat, as its effect to human health is still ambiguous.”

 

Kitti cited the report from United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), which claims that Paraquat has no connection with cancers in humans and Parkinson's disease, while its residue in agricultural products bears no significant toxicological effects.

better cripple the industry than cripple humans - and innocent animals as well

Better that the industry becomes crippled than the industry crippling people.

ban sugar cane as well. its killed nore people in my neighbourhood than anything else. The black rain and chemicals have to be banned, end of story.... All this assistance to farmers to kill themselves and innocent neighbours just to export the sht...? 

i used to have 3 bee hives but the bees all died as soon as they planted suger cane next to my property.. Killing more than just humans!!

Glyphosate and Paraquate are dangerous to the farmer if used improperly. For those who believe they penetrate the food chain to any significant level you are mistaken but if you insist it is the case I recomend you stop eating now. If it is in the ground then it is in all food animal and vegetable so stop eating immediately!

I bought some bee hives for wild bees when I moved here. Then I noticed there is no bees at all. I'm in the middle of sugar cane and cassava fields.

It is found in the Canadian food chain and it's probably worse in the US and anywhere they spray glyphosate pre-harvest. 

 

I have as much sympathy for the sugar industry as i do the cocaine industry.

I'm surrounded by sugar as far as the eye can see.

I grow a crop that needs pollination from bees and it's set seed nicely. 

How are the 4 countries exporting more sugar than Thailand surviving?

Won't affect our production because we never use chemicals the guy is full of it and himself and obviously makes his millions selling poisonous chemical.The only thing reduced will be his profits from poisoning the food chain.

Are you sure you see honey bees? Pollinators that I see in my area are bumblebee, butterfly, ant, hornet and many others but no wild honey bees at all. Still pollination is poor compared to my previous experience in Canada. 

I think this guy is also president of the Thailand Organic Sustainable Sugar Environmentalists Representatives (TOSSER) and he should come clean about his vested interest.

The use of pla raa could also be a contributing factor.

Actually, I'm with you on this. Liver cancer rates are very high in the North East and it is mainly attributed to the eating of raw or under-cooked fish and high levels of rice whiskey consumption.  However, I am sure that agro-chemicals also contribute to the problem.

 

Perhaps one good knock-on effect is improved air quality due to less burning if farmers turn away from sugar cane.

Amazing! Toxic to humans causing Parkinson's and is one of the most common pesticides. And apparently without it, according to our expert, we can't grow sugar like they did 50 years ago.

Well, that's a good point. 

So it's a stupid idea to ban those chemicals in the name of economy, means profit?. ????
