Name that hedge! Help me choose please :-)

Featured Replies

I am looking to plant a hedge around my land. It will be partly in full sun and partly semi-shaded by orchard trees. The one that I have found that I like so far is as in the attached photos. What is it? I originally thought Chaa Fukien, but the leaf is not quite right...

What good alternatives are there for a hedge that will be thick, "privet like", and relatively easy to trim. I don't want anything super fast growing or too flowery like bougainvillea.

Thank you for your help  ????

I got the answer via a local Facebook group.  For anyone else who is interested, it is Ton Khoi (ต้นข่อย), commonly known as Siamese rough bush, or Tooth Brush tree.

At the risk of holding a conversation with myself...

It seems that this hedging plant that I am trying to identify is definitely of the Khoi family, but my wife tells me that locally they call this hedging plant Chaa. I have also now found an article from the Bangkok Post (link below) that indeed suggests that the version of Khoi that we have here up north used as hedges has the common name Chaa Soi (and is a slight variant on the Khoi bushes/trees used in topiary around Bangkok). So, I guess it is Chaa Soi that I will be buying!

This is my last post chatting with myself, honestly, but I just want to share that I talked with locals in the village over the weekend who have this as their hedges and they all knew it as Chaa. Nobody had ever heard of it being called Chaa Soi. So, Chaa it is, and heading off to Kamtieng market with a good sprig in-hand, to hopefully get the right thing.
