I have a valid work permit, but will be finishing work in Thailand on the day it expires.  Do I need to surrender the work permit at the department of labour or can I just let it expire?

sorry.. what are you talking about?

He is talking about handing the 'document' back to the labor office after you have finished with it, i.e. the 'work permit booklet'.

You have 2 options:

1) leave it with your company. Its also their duty to cancel it.

2) if you want to play safe or fast take it to the labor office by yourself.

In any case, dont forget to get a letter from your company mentioning your last day of work in the company.

I kept mine as a souvenir and a reminder to never work in Thailand again.

And you never will, unless you first cancel/return that one.
