US Passport renewal: In person vs mail timetable

Featured Replies

I think when I renew by mail it takes 2-3 weeks for my new passport to arrive. Does anyone know how long it takes when you go in person? It would kill most of a day for me, but I might be on a tight time table so shaving 1-2 weeks (or all of the wait if they give it in person) would be good to know about.

Keeping an eye on this one. I need to renew my US passport next year. A little leery of doing it by mail, looking forward to the replies.

You could just look at their website

I just renewed my passport by mail.  I mailed it 1 Nov 19.  I got my new passport in the mail on 15 Nov 19.  I made one copy of my old passport and removed my 90 day report notice, TM6 and my address notice before I mailed it.

Edit:  I am a US citizen. In Ratchaburi.

You only save the amount it takes for the application to arrive at the embassy after you mail it.

Applying in person your new passport is still mailed back to you.

About two weeks to get the new passport is normal.

Info is here on the embassy website. https://th.usembassy.gov/u-s-citizen-services/passports/

You might save one or two days (time it takes to EMS your package to Bangkok) if you choose to renew in person in Bangkok.

If you mail-in you have to assemble the proper payment, two separate local bank vouchers (fee and return EMS fee) in THB.

If you go in person you can pay by credit card (USD) (and pay 100 THB at the Thai Post booth within the Consular portico). Obviously you have to make an appointment.

I went in person a few months ago - I live ~ 2 Km from the Consular building - on July 30, received my passport on August 8.

If you need to use your passport in the interim, you need to apply in person, in case that wasn't obvious. And return in person to pick up the new passport, and to have the old passport punched

Passport cards come separately and require a second Thai Post EMS fee of 100 THB. My passport card came on August 16. Passport cards are not a substitute for a passport.

Make sure you fish out the Embassy "new passport" letter from the EMS pack, you'll need that at Immigration.

I did mine last time ( 2016) using the phuket outreach service, ( saves a trip to Bangkok)

had it in my hands 12 days after submitted the paperwork

I did mine at Chiang Mai and I picked up. It took less than 10 days

I applied in person, paid my fees and return postage. They handed my punched passport back to me and I received the new one by mail, 10 days later.

That seems like the key benefit of going in person. Otherwise you have no recourse if a police officer asks to see your physical passport (and isn't satisfied with pictures or copies)

They do not do Outreach anymore.

BKK vs US?

Is it faster to renew a US passport here in Bangkok than back in the US? Is the cost the same?

Much faster in the US if you use an agent. You can get one within 48 hours but you'll pay several hundred dollars for it.

I recently got a new "Second Passport" in the US and had it in hand in 48 hours through an agency.

Used this company:

Much faster than the states unless you pay a $60 fee.

The fee here is $110 verses $80 in the states.

True but you can not expedite the process in Thailand. In the US you can.

If you're on a time constraint then the difference is important.
