Any Recommendations? English->thai Translation

Hi all. We are in the process of expanding our UK business and bringing it in Thailand. We have some UK sales brochures and business proposal documents that need accurate translation from English->Thai. Much of the success of our business will depend on translation accuracy of these documents so the translation needs to be of the highest level. Anyone know of a reputable company to approach? I am based in Pattaya but have no aversions to dealing with companies outside the area. Thanks to anyone with any leads. Also, so that I've got an idea of the cost involved, can anyone let me know what the marker rates are per word for professional translation of this type. I assume it is per word??

Thanks in advance!

Thai translation agencies typically charge per page, the price ranging from 250 baht up via 500-750 baht (standard for more reputable companies) and on to whatever they think they can get away with.

There is at least some correlation between price and quality, so looking for the very cheapest solution is usually not advisable. It is unlikely you yourself will be able to judge the quality accurately, so you might want to contact a Thai copywriter for assistance with this.

When it comes to introducing marketing material on a new market, sometimes a complete revision of the material is required due to cultural differences.

You will already be familiar with the differences in marketing strategies between the UK and the US. In that case we are talking about two countries sharing (or divided by) a common language... Thailand is yet another case to itself.

My first impulse would be to look for established Thai translators based in the UK. They will be more expensive, but they will also typically be more tuned in to the cultural differences.

As for specific recommendations, I do not have any. Still hope my post can be of some help.

If you pm me I'll give you the contact details for a company that does "locailzation" work, which I think means that they can do more than just render English into Thai.

Many thanks for all your responses. I tend to think you are right in what you say "meadish_sweetball" --- a UK company is going to have the edge in as much as they know the nuances of both languages and therefore you would expect them to be best in getting the true meaning across when translating, as opposed to a native Thai English Grad doing the job with no experience of living in the UK.

I've just had a quick google check and found this company : http://www.london-translations.co.uk. They claim to be approved to BS EN 15038 standard for translation services. Anyone heard of this company or this BS standard... hope it's not actually BS - LOL. What I like about them is that they have 3 levels of service for translation - 1st draft, standard company and business critical translation. Would obviously opt for biz critical and the prices seem fairly reasonable although I know I could probably get them job done for a fraction of the price here TH but likely to a far lesser standard? Was quoted 300 quid or thereabouts for the job (1500 words) and they say they can turn it around in 1-2 business days - not too bad hey.

Again, thanks for all your help and if anyone knows of another respected UK translation companies I would love to here.

hi,

given that you believe the success of your business will ride on these brochures and other documents, it might be better to talk to a marketing/advertising firm in thailand. if you want this stuff to be compelling, an accurate translation may not be enough.

all the best.
