That's what the Thais always do. And that is why, because of the 0.005% of bad guys in Thailand we all have to jump through hoops and also be treated as potential criminals.

  • More likely: And this is xenophobia.

  • 5 days seems trivial and I guess plenty of people do overstays of this length and just pay the fine on the way out. This arrest sends a message and it isn't pleasant.

Immigration doing their job, same would happen in most countries if they knew where the overstayers were, there are alerts when having to present passport and have it copied at hotels, they check your visa

Hope the guy was allowed to get his possessions from the hotel he was staying in.

Amazing that so many accuse the Thai of being incompetent, but when they do something upholding the law, doing their jobs, they get condemned by so many.

Must have peed someone off to get done on only 5 days overstay.

So much doesn't get reported on thai TV.

(Almost as bad as China)

I read more on TVF, and my thai partner has never heard about it..

(Not that she is interested)

Haha - or maybe it is the American phenomenon of "fake" news. Media reporting fictional stories and staging events to scare the public and misinform them

Exactly, pi$$ of your girlfriend and she calls 1178 and you are history!

"Naew Na urged the public to continue making calls to the immigration police on 1178."

The only message this arrest sends is, don't overstay your visa, or time permitted to stay.

I don't get the "it isn't pleasant" part ?

Maybe that’s the only message you’re receiving. I think it’s far more ominous.

I’m in the Philippines now and you pay a fine if you overstay, whether at the airport or going into an immigration office.

And the I.O.’s are all friendly and seem to actually appreciate tourists visiting their country.

What are they meant to do just leave him and see how many months/years he racks up? arrest and get rid of. People moan when they don't do their jobs properly and moan when they do.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

Why is it lunacy? What would the German immigration do to a thai who is on overstay? Probably do the exact same thing and rightly so. If you don’t have a visa or your visa is ready to expire, either extend it or leave the country before you overstay and then you can go back to the country again without problem, regardless of what country it is. Overstay and face the consequence.

Its lunacy because it is very bad publicity for a country that is trying to attract tourists. The tourist police should have helped him get an extension, given him a warning a fine and made the situation into a public relations coup not a disaster.  This police action stinks of bullying Gestapo tactics completely out of proportion to the minor crime. It makes Thailand,  the Thai people and the Thai authorities seem very unreasonable and lacking compassion. When people are treated this harshly in civilised countries it makes headline news not because people are proud but because people are outraged and embarrassed. Ministers are forced to publicly apologise.

Sending 5 officials to deal with a minor civic matter reeks of incompetence and overkill.

Only cattle give passport, but I never give it.

I agree.  Too bad there is very little to go by in the story.  I am actually thinking his wife or his boss contacted immigration asking where their husband or employee  is - haha.  And please go find him

That is what would have happened to me at 45 years old.

Am just wondering how a guy at that age can just decide to "stay" longer than he planned on holiday.

When i was 45 and working,  there is no way I could have stayed anywhere "longer" than planned.

Too many responsibilities and commitments back home

Not all of us are timerous wage slaves. Anway how would an employer know where you were? How could they speak Thai to immigration?  What kind of wife would act in such a contrlooing way? Your suggestion is very unlikely.

No, how about 1 officer advising the man that he is  in danger of getting into deep doo doo, help him obtain an extension and advise him that he needs to sort his S$$t out and get a different visa or leave the country, not just arrest him and kick him out with a long ban on the blacklist ?

Welcome to the LOS, Land of sadness.

Paraded on national t.v for a 5 day overstay is embarrassing ! Before long the immigration will be wanting to drive you from the airport to the hotel of your choice before returning to collect you and return you to the airport with a surcharge of 5,000 baht

The reason why a 5 day overstay of a single individual is sensationalised this way, is because the current administration has been, for the last 5 years, manipulating Thai public perception.

The article above is also written for Thai consumption.

They encouraged "Thainess", where Uncle P dressed up in traditional Thai costumes and took selfies with Thai actors, and published countless articles over the years, putting foreigners in a bad light, from Operation "Good guys in Bad Guys out", X-Ray Foreigner, TM30 (what if the foreigner bombs your residence video), foreign overstayers, foreign pensioneers without insurance, and so on.

Nobody listen to Uncle.

With all the propaganda, nobody cares anymore about "foreigners not meeting visa conditions".

This is quite typical in communist or non democratic regimes that wish to hang on to power, so not a big surprise there.

Good they are making an example. Time for all the over stayers to (1) Turn themselves in. (2) Make a escape by sea. (3) Join The Pattaya Flying Club. Thousands more in just Pattaya alone keep looking. Raid the bars and have more road blocks.

Harshly?? Arrested for breaking the law?? Overstay, get deported, what is harsh about that, unless of course it is the fact they caught him

Aptly put but you might have quoted the author (German Lutheran pastor Martin Niemöller), otherwise its called plagiary.

Good lord a whole 5 days, well he's only got himself to blame, he must have known that this horrendous crime wouldn't go unpunished. For his sake I hope they use pain killers when they remove his testicals, can't have criminals like this reproducing.

Another nail in the coffin to Thailand as tourist destination.

Throw the German in prison together with thai rapists, criminals and murderers and make a statement that this will happen to all foreigners who forget to renew expired visas.

Maybe this will help Immigration police to stop overstaying tourists...... or stop all tourists?

Thais are not interested in this story because authoritarian police actions are normal to them because they are oppressed. If you whip a dog enough it wont fight back  it wont wimper. It will just be cowed and think beating is normal. This is the current mental state of Thais. I saw the mentally in Cuba and Libya.  Fear and lack of compassion leading to a 'close down'. Its very sad that Thailand has come to this. Its going to get much worse for the Thais. What the authorities do to outsiders today they will do to the locals tomorrow. I thank god I have no kids here,  no loved ones and no property. In the upper echelons of the power structure there is no wisdom or compassion to curb the excesses of men with guns and uniforms. Very sad.
