Severity of drought next year likely to equal that of 2015-16 in Thailand

Thailand is at risk of a drought like that in 2015 and 2016, while the volume of rainfall, from this month through May, is forecast to be 5-10% lower than normal, said Mr. Seri Suparathit, director of the Centre of Climate Change and Disaster at Rangsit University, today (Friday).

Next May, after the drought, he predicted that Thailand’s weather will be affected by La Niña phenomenon, which may lead to heavy flooding in several provinces.

The Royal Irrigation Department is also forecasting serious drought for the same period, affecting tap water production, which may become brackish due to an influx of sea water.

Yes, it does not look good.

I've just returned from a road trip to Nan - the central plains are totally scorched: hot, dusty, rivers low, plants dying. The contrast with the lush green of the north is really stark.

La Nina ?

Prodigy of global warming. No weather is the same around the world.

Don't worry farmers of Thailand.

The prime minister who not one person voted for will instruct, order, command and demand that the drought be dealt with within  seven days.

The wife has just said she won't be planting rice again next year, rent it out to an optimist same as this year, at least she gets something out of it.

This will not prevent Somchay and his partner Somkit from having their pickup washed at least once a week

They can't forecast tomorrows weather let alone next years!

Has been totally dry up here since the middle of October, a period that we usually have some rain. Do not want to think about what it will be like come April/May if the coming months are the usual dry season.

I've just entered dates for Songkran 2020 onto my phone.  What's the betting? In the light of this news thread  will it be curtailed or go ahead for the happiness/misery of the people?

Corrected bad English. Sorry folks.

I heard that this year's El Nino would lead directly into next year's La Nina. In which case, it will be dire... Anyone else hear that?

Don't worry,it rains on the needy and we are due for a good start.

3"s over songkran will be nice in a thunderstorm.

Do you know you have problems with water, and what do you do? Shoot thousands of liters to clear the road from the 2.5 particles!
Do you recognize idiocy in your doing?

Wasn't 2016 when they had announced Songkran had been shortened and asked everyone to be sensible with water use? Made <deleted> all difference in Pattaya.

Waste of effort. Thais know best. Thais know what they're doing.

Made Fanny All difference anywhere.

Thais expect laws to benefit them in Thai-understandable ways, otherwise they're ignored.
