The high-pressure system covering upper Thailand is weakening but the cold weather and light fog in upper Thailand will continue, the Thailand Meteorological Department forecast on Friday (January 3).

Minimum temperature will be in the range of 16-23 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the stronger northeast monsoon prevailing across the lower Gulf of Thailand and the lower South will trigger waves up to 2-3 metres high and more than three metres high when there are thundershowers. Ships have been advised caution while small boats must keep ashore until January 5, the forecast said.

During January 3-5, the westerly trough moves to Myanmar and the upper North of Thailand, bringing isolated thundershowers and gusty winds.

The weather forecast for the next 24 hours is as follows:

Northern region: Cool weather with fog in the morning and thundershowers in 10 per cent of the area, temperature lows of 16-20 degrees Celsius and highs of 30-33 degrees Celsius. Temperature likely to drop to 6-14 degrees on hilltops with frost in some areas.

Northeastern region: Cool weather with light fog in the morning, temperature lows of 16-21 degrees Celsius and highs of 32-34 degrees Celsius. Temperature likely to drop to 10-12 degrees Celsius on hilltops.

Central region: Cool weather with fog in the morning; temperature lows of 21-23 degrees Celsius, highs of 33-35 degrees Celsius.

Eastern region: Cool weather with fog in the morning; mininum temperature of 21-25 degrees Celsius and highs of 33-35 degree Celsius; waves 1-2 metres high.

Southern region (east coast): Mostly cloudy with thundershowers in 20 per cent of the areas; lows of 21-26 degrees Celsius, highs of 30-33 degrees Celsius; waves 2-3 metres high, rising to 3 metres during storms.

Southern region (west coast): Partly cloudy skies with thunder showers in 10 per cent of the areas; lows of 22-26 degrees Celsius and highs of 32-34 degree Celsius; waves a metre high, rising to 1-2 metres during storms.

Bangkok and surrounding areas: Partly cloudy and light fog in the morning; lows of 22-25 degrees Celsius, highs of 32-35 degrees Celsius.

Excepting the North and North East it seems like the hot season has started 2 months shead of schedule.

Certainly not cool or foggy here in Chiang Mai city area. Morning low of 17C and daytime maximum of 30C with clear blue sky for day upon day. Loving this winter.
