Most poll respondents say top brass should not be senators automatically

Most respondents to a recent poll agree with House Speaker Chuan Leekpai’s suggestion that, if the Constitution is to be amended, the five military top brass and the national police chief should not be appointed ex-officio senators.

According to Super Poll, 75.4% of the respondents agree that the six key figures, namely the supreme commander, the commanders of the army, navy and air force and the national police chief, should not be automatically appointed senators, because their role in charge of national security is not related to the legislative role of the Senate, and that it is inappropriate for them to receive salaries from two state sources, parliament, the military and the police, at the same time.

24.6% of the respondents, however, oppose the suggestion because they think this issue is insignificant and they don’t want to see the country return to political division as a result of attempts to amend the Constitution.

Leekpai is a complete snake. It makes sod all difference if the top commanders are on the Senate or not, when the other 243 are also appointed! Top brass will have proxies all over the Senate it makes no difference other than the meeting stipend whether they are there or not.

Its Leekpai being his typical spineless self of pretending to care about these things, but doing so by pulling up a point that he knows will make no difference to the Government. If he really cared about the appointments, he would complain about all of the appointments.

Where is the option that douches 'automatically'?

"the supreme commander, the commanders of the army, navy and air force and the national police chief, should not be appointed senators " (At all) is the correct approach in my opinion.

Indeed, what's the point of talking about FIVE when the bigger issue is the entire lot of 250 un-elected lackeys that have been put into positions of legislative power.
