Canada's Trudeau: Iran plane victims would be alive had there been no regional tensions

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Monday that the victims of the Ukrainian airliner shot down in Iran would still be alive if the recent escalation of tensions in the region had not happened, according to a transcript of an interview with Global News TV.

The U.S. killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani in Baghdad in a Jan. 3 drone strike prompted Iran to launch a missile attack on Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops on Jan. 8, hours before the passenger jet was shot down. All 176 aboard were killed, including 57 Canadians.

"I think if there were no tensions, if there was no escalation recently in the region, those Canadians would be right now home with their families," Trudeau said in the interview.

Trudeau said Canada did not receive a heads up before the United States killed Soleimani, and that he "obviously" would have preferred one.

"The U.S. makes its determinations. We attempt to work as an international community on big issues. But sometimes countries take actions without informing their allies," he said.

Trudeau said that while the government was working as quickly as possible to bring the bodies home for burial, it was likely to take weeks or "perhaps even months."

Canada said on Monday that Iran had signalled that Canadian investigators would take an active role in the probe of the crash, which Iran said at the weekend had been caused by a missile it fired in a "disastrous mistake."

The protestors have been chanting death to the Khomeini lately.

As far as Justin goes, the PM of Thailand used to use the same line of thinking. It wouldn't;t have happened if the faring weren't in Thailand. It wouldn't have happened if there were no tensions. Okay. It also wouldn't;t have happened had the Canadians not went to Iran and supported a regime that would ultimately shoot them down.

Not really. Corbyn was a socialist. This guy is progressive no doubt, but he isn’t anti capitalism. Also, he knows how to win elections... a massive difference.

Anyone else notice how Trump has stolen Trudeau's presidential rhetoric and is now warning Iran that "the world is watching"? Clearly Trump can't come up with anything independently, like when he stole "fake news" when it was used on his pundits..

Trudeau coined “the world is watching”?

I think not.

Kindly tell me the difference between a socialist/communist and a progressive

You think Canada is a comunist country, Eh? Why?

Is it because they have universal health care? Because they have lots of guns but don't go around shooting each other? Because they have policing by consent? Because they are continuingly saying "Sorry"? Because marijuana is legal? Because every now and again they win at baseball, basketball and ice hockey (ok this one a lot)?

So you because you can’t explain the difference you deflect?

in any event, I think he was talking about Trudeau, not Canada.

Has he nationalized the means of production in the country? No he hasn’t.

Get Trump to pay compensation for the dead Canadians. That will be justice.

Anything that is to the left of Ghengis Khan and doesn’t involve conspiracy theories is ‘socialism’ to these blokes.

Do you not understand the question?

OK I'll give it a go.

Socialism is a system where the goverment governs primarily for the benefit of the people.

Communism is a system of government where, usually, a dictator rules for the benefit of a very few.

Progressive governments govern with the purpose of social change, if in fact, the system needs changing.

How's that?

I think not.

No but he recently used it to calm tensions in Iran, something Trump could never do.

The world needs to applaud when influential leaders speak the truth about US foreign policy. We all know the consequences people suffer when they speak the truth about US policy.

Having a degree and masters in economics, public policy and finance, I understand the question very well.

I’m just not one of these people who label anyone or anything I don’t like as ‘socialist’ which is what many people do these days.

Neither are you one of “these people” that actually answer a question.

Apparently, you are one of “these people” that are (apparently) unable to answer questions, and instead take the opportunity to condescend and brag about how smart they are.

Let me point out you started with your little condescending ‘don’t you understand the question’ one liner.

He hasn’t nationalized the means of production. He’s not a socialist. Pretty easy answer.

You just think that because he doesn’t go out of his way to be a pr!ck to all and sundry that he must be a socialist, which is the standard definition these days for people who have not idea of what it actually means.
