British expat arrested for selling counterfeit watches in Pattaya

A British man has been arrested in Pattaya for allegedly selling counterfeit luxury watches.

Acting on a tip off, police arrested the 44 year old British man, named Mark, at a condominium on Pattaya Beach Road at around 2pm on Tuesday.

Police seized 12 counterfeit watches, which they say have an estimated street value in excess of 100,000 baht.

Police said Mark sold the watches to unsuspecting customers via Instagram and WhatsApp.

An Instagram profile which lists the watches for sales was still online at the time of publishing.

Mark was arrested after police launched a sting operation by pretending to be a customer interested in buying the watches.

Following his arrest, Mark revealed he bought the watches from a 45 year old Thai man who has now also been arrested.

Police seized a further 40 fake watches from the Thai man.

Both men are now facing charges of selling counterfeit goods, while the British man may also be charged for working without a work permit.

Mark, who has lived in Pattaya for several years and is well known among the expat community, was described by a friend to Thaivisa as a “loveable rogue who just lost his way”

These fakes are getting pricey. Last time I bought a Rolex they were selling for 500THB back in the 80's.

He'll probably have to do some 'time' for this.

Let's 'face' it, he deserves more than the 'strap'.

Just put his 'hands' up and confessed, so he did.

Seems a bit silly saying he had no permit to sell fake watches. Bit like saying he had no permit to be a thief

Exactly: he's doing a job that Thais can do. He needs a work permit. ????

Granted, what he was doing wasn't right, but it wasn't exactly harmful to Thailand, was it? Is a ban really necessary? Give him a fine and let him know if he does it again the consequences will be more serious. Banning him from Thailand seems extreme and unduly harsh to me, and hardly fitting of the crime.

another "Brit" in the news and not in a good news

If it is a 'crime' then he will have a criminal  record in Thailand maybe. Usually that can get a person banned. Thailand is in a position to be picky.

He must have been desperate to take up selling fake watches.

regards Worgeordie

Mark unfortunately has no dead friends to bail him out????

Good to know he was arrested. Now there are ZERO counterfeit products in Pattaya!

The real reason he was arrested was that when the cops came to "talk with him" he kept screaming  " Wai ! ?  Wai ! ? "    .    Obviously something was lost in translation ............

10 years  back a genuine  Bali Rolex  was only the equivalent of 300THB. If I averaged the time each of the two I bought kept over a week it worked  out nearly accurate !
