Drunks, speeders and grandads targeted in bid to reduce road accidents

Aiming to reduce road accidents year-round, the Royal Thai Police will be keeping a closer eye on riskier drivers – the elderly, alcoholics and speeders – especially in holiday periods.

Deputy Commissioner-General Pol General Suwat Chaengyotsuk announced at a seminar on Wednesday (January 15) that accident records from the just-ended New Year holidays had been scrutinised to identify which preventive measures had been most successful.

An action plan highlighting those measures has been drawn up.

“To reduce accidents during the Songkran festival and throughout the year, the action plan includes a campaign to encourage bikers to wear helmets and lists of drivers who are accident risks in every village and subdistrict,” Suwat said.

“We will coordinate with the relevant groups to hold a training course for village heads and subdistrict chiefs on instilling road discipline among citizens and we’ll have patrol teams monitoring traffic conditions and driver alcohol levels throughout the year.”

People need to be more fully aware of the law, Suwat said, and that can be achieved through stricter enforcement, resulting in a sustainable reduction in accidents.

The bottomline is this, the motoring public are not afraid or worry what the police can do to them IF they get caught, the Thai police don't have the proper tools or the real willingness to combat such mammoth task all the while willing to accept a grafts and bribes to turn a blind eye which will defeat  the purpose of such campaign anyway...

Interesting that older drivers being targetted, I wonder what theThai stats show about accidents and older drivers.

Western stats show less accidents per capita on over 55 year old drivers until age 75.

Well if you're a speeding ,drunk, alcoholic, grandad, PLEASE slow down [and carry 500 bht]

Nothing will change till roads are honestly policed.

Motorists can do what they like.

Too many bulls##t campaigns and no action.

'encourage bikers to wear helmets' So it's not a requirement then?

<end of sarcasm mode>

'People need to be more fully aware of the law' IIRC hasn't this been law for nearly thirty years now? Is there some 'hard of learning' issue here?

OK, I'm going to cap my age at 66.  No more birthdays.  I'll keep my speed down to 50 km/h and my blood alcohol level to .25 when I'm out and about.   That should help, especially with the gas mileage on my scooter.  Might even improve my road rash.

An exhaustive list no doubt! How innovative.

Strange but true, I find Thai drivers similar to New Zealand ones, generally pleasant, relaxed folk until they get behind the wheel. Too many aggressive drivers in both imo. Per capita Thailand win the championship.

People need to be more fully aware of the law like looking in the direction of travel ????

Thailand has so many accidents because they have the most lousy lazy policeforce of the world.

targeting police officers who don't do their jobs would be way more effective!

How is that related to KM made ? I mean i can believe that old people make less accidents if they drive less. I would say middle aged people are better drivers as old people

Grandads slowing down even more? They already drive in walking speeds.

I'm shirty for not allowing granddads from drinking in the passenger seat, let alone driving. ????

New Zealand is nothing like Thailand on the roads.

In fact it is like the polar opposite.

The Thais can get anything right. Older drivers can indeed get "too old", however, especially in Thailand the number of accidents and casualties caused by this population is tiny compared to the disaster cause by younger folks, on Yabaa and often drunk.

Just keep it as it is and stop messing around with limits and regulations

Beware of little old ladies on motorbikes especially near markets!

"especially in holiday periods." ?????????

Who are the "elderly"?

Yesterday, I saw a police officer in full uniform being given a lift on a motorbike by a civilian who was not wearing a helmet.  Is that ridiculous or what ?
