'doctors have since confirmed the 32 year old, who hails from Lancashire in the north of England, does not have the Chinese virus but a severe strain of flu.'

A doctor is a medical person, works in a hospital, wears a white coat.

Always get an adult to read with you.

WHICH doctors...? ????

I hope he recovers and it is none of my business about the Crowd Funding for his parents. Those that criticize it are most likely not to participate other than donating a load of "noise" to boost their own relevance.

Good he has insurance.

A gofundme page to support parents!

I'm afraid travelling and staying here with your son is a normal expense in the curcumstances that unless parents are destitute they should finance themselves, just like all other families do and has been done in the past before online begging began. Son has insurance so no unmanigable bills and so the family pay their own travel expenses to fly out and stay. An unexpected cost but that's part of life.

Hope for a speedy recovery.

They've already reached well over their target of 2000 pounds. Free money is free money. Survival of the fittest.

This morning it was this:

He had to be ferried by specialised seaplane because his damaged lungs could not cope with high altitude travel.

This afternoon it was a boat.

Do Thais know the difference between the two modes of transport?

Get it right will you. It was the ultra reliable 'Sun' newspaper that reported the seaplane. Not the Thais! But at least The Sun got his name right.

!2 pages of utter drivel on the earlier thread due to their crappy reporting and now this latest report hasn't even got his name right! It's Ash Shorley. Ashley Shore is a girls name. ????

Yes. Everyone know.

Do the English newspaper know it?

I'm with you... I hate online begging. Carry your own weight parents.

Doubt "the Thais " write for them or that the inconsistency is necessarily to blame on them, but when in doubt blame everything on "the Thais."

My sister's sister-in-law just died from a case of influenza at the age of 51 in Massachusetts.  My sister said "It had turned septic." I think that means that the viral infection had triggered a bacterial infection.  The present wisdom from health care providers is that it is not necessary to take antibiotics for the flu.   What seems to hsppen, in my opinion, is that the flu transitions to pneumonia with out the sufferer being aware of it happening.  Of course overuse of antibiotics is a problem but if these people had been taking an antibiotic that is effective for pneumonia such as Avelox or Aizithromycin, they may not have died.  Personally, if I have flu-like symptoms that linger for 7 days, I start a ten-day course of Avelox. So far, I have been cured every time and don't have severe side-effects.

I wonder how many people are aware of when their infection progresses from viral to bacterial.  My hunch is that, given the standard medical advice, most people try to just wait the flu out without going to the hospital for tests.

I also take the have a license granted by Thai authorities. One that can be taken away fairly easily.

Six years ago, after leaving Bangkok and arriving in Melbourne, after about four days I was admitted to hospital with Pneumonia and had 5 days in ICU. I had major complications and it was discovered that I had also contracted Legionnaires Disease, although it took one week to diagnose.. After 2 weeks in hospital was discharged, and it was a long 3 mth recovery before I could return to work, albeit very slowly for a long period.

Because I have an auto immune issue because of chronic rheumatoid arthritis, I was told later that I had only a 10% chance of survival...

I contracted my life threatening illness at a boutique Sukhumvit hotel, where the most likely culprit was poorly maintained and mouldy aircond unit..

Now my second chance of life..

Flu can be deadly.

Flu vaccination, tailored for the region is available throughout Thailand in hospitals and clinics.

Working in the medical field I have had flu vaccinations every year for more years than I care to remember and do so here in Chiang Mai.

I posted in another thread or forum. I got tested for the coronavirus, negative maybe, but I did have flu and pneumonia.

Had the fluid in my lungs drained, pain sure, then had my sinuses drained and vacumed.

Treated with Anti Virals AND Anti Bacterials. Anti Virals to kill the virus and Anti Bacteridls to kill off any secondary infection.

I have TKR'S in both knees. Yes artificial joints to those who have never heard if total knee replacements.

The hospital and the doctors told just how concerned they are over this new Coronovirus, but it cannot be published, as it would cause a major pannic attack world wide.

So I leave it up to the keyboard pagans to tell me what is real and what is scaremongering, having been in this position myself.

I dont need to convince anybody, as to the seriousness of these viral and bacterial outbrakes, I know what its all about.

Free choice to believe or not believe.

You had influenza, so what? It's nasty and can lead to many infections and millions die from it every year but most people get over it one way or another and live to complain about it on the internet.

Just be aware that it is not the safest of drugs and others can be used in its place.

"Fluoroquinolone (of which Moxifloxacin is one) antibiotics can cause serious or disabling side effects that may not be reversible.

Avelox should be used only for infections that cannot be treated with a safer antibiotic".

If this guy did have the Chinese virus they would do everything their power to cover it up.

It's fairly useless though. The cat is out of the bag and it's just a matter of time before more cases pop up. After the Chinese New Year there will be carriers aplenty, ready to spread it to outside.

Yes, thanks for the warning about Avelox.  About five years ago when I contracted a lung infection in Bangkok, a doctor at Bumrungrad prescribed two other antibiotics first and then went to Avelox which finally cured me.  So it was the antibiotic of third resort.  Could you suggest an alternative medicine which would be equally effective?  BTW, it seems that the flu vaccines are not very effective for elderly people like me.  This is information from several recent studies.

A recent news bulletin said that the new coronavirus is communicable from human to human but it is not known just how contagious it is.  The "fish market" where it supposedly was spawned also sold lots of live animals including civet cats, the original vector of SARS.
