Thailand finds fourth China coronavirus infection

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand has quarantined a fourth patient with the new coronavirus including one Thai national, authorities said on Wednesday, days before the Lunar New Year holiday when thousands of Chinese tourists are expected to arrive.

Nine people have died from the flu-like coronavirus in China, with 440 confirmed cases, most in the central city of Wuhan where the virus first appeared late last year.

The Thai patient, a 73-year-old woman, had traveled to Wuhan during the New Year holidays and developed a fever after returning, the Public Health Ministry said.

She was being monitored in a separate ward in a hospital in Nakhon Pathom, 60 km (37 miles) west of Bangkok, where her condition was gradually improving, it added.

"We can control the situation. There have not been cases of human-to-human transmission in Thailand because we detected the patients as soon as they arrived," Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul told reporters.

Two other Chinese patients had recovered and been sent home while a third would return once tests showed he was clear of the virus, Anutin said.

Thai officials were stepping up screening at airports to look for passengers with high body temperatures, coughs, headaches and trouble breathing, police said.

The virus has spread to other cities including Beijing and Shanghai, as well as the United States, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan.

Two patients carrying coronavirus still in quarantine: Anutin

By THE NATION

Three Chinese and one Thai were diagnosed with carrying the new coronavirus and quarantined, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul said on Wednesday (January 22).

The coronavirus, whose outbreak began in Wuhan, China earlier this month, causes pneumonia.

“Three of these patients were Chinese, while one is a Thai national who had travelled back from Wuhan,” he said. “Two of the Chinese patients have already recovered and returned to China, while the Thai patient is receiving treatment at Nakhon Pathom hospital.”

Anutin added that there was no human-to-human transmission of the virus in the quarantined patients.

“The condition of the Thai patient is improving gradually. Once they fully recover, the ministry will compare the hospital’s test results with results from other medical institutes. If the result turns out negative, then they will be discharged,” said Anutin.

“The Ministry of Public Health is strictly following World Health Organisation [WHO] guidelines in disease control to ensure the safety of Thai people,” Anutin said.

“We have regularly updated and discussed the situation with WHO executives, who have complimented Thailand for its efforts in providing information regarding the disease to the people, which has enabled precautionary measures and reduced the level of public panic caused by lack of understanding,” the minister added.

Can we remain positive on this please. The Coronavirus is spread like "colds" and "flus" by coughing, sneezing, and general close contact. It's when any particular strain has a high "virulence" factor that makes infection a more serious issue. Most colds and flus are easily managed by the individuals own immune system. But... should a strain have a high virulence factor, disease and symptoms of the virus become more intolerable and widespread. Everyone should take precautions, especially when in closed/close contact with others that are presenting with symptoms (cough, sneezing, malaise, fatigue, aches, fever). Your best defense it to foster a strong immune system (through good health practices) and to employ barrier devices. An "N95" particulate filtration mask (aka hepa filtration), regular hand washings, sanitizers, basic hygiene, and general avoidance of others with symptoms.

We are going to be made a whole ramdam for 4 dead because of an evil thing which wanders and comes from China;

but 25,000 road deaths, a number that will increase rapidly if the speed limit of 90 km / h is increased to 120 per hour ..;
there, no, it's normal;
Move along, there's nothing to see ...

There has been no human to human transmission of the virus, so the English guy in Hospital Phuket got it from a monkey.

Oh that's right he does not have it, oh yes he does say conflicting news reports.

If he does not have it then maybe he was poisoned by bed bug spray like the poor soles in Chiang Mai a few years ago.

Brace yourselves there may well be an epidemic well underway.

Stock up on vitamin C.

I came in Suvarhnabumi 2 days ago, some time after this virus was in the news. Immigration was quite full, although not as full as I’ve seen it, but there were a lot of Chinese group tours in immigration and I didn’t see any cameras checking passengers temperature like past incidences anywhere in the airport.

Thailand still in denial. Took them weeks with the SARS fiasco a few years back. On the up side, TAT will come up with some extraordinary marketing brain farts to monetize this one!

How about giving instruction to the general populace on how to avoid spreading the infection instead. Like...

1. Avoid any contact with Chinese

2. Don't pick your nose and swipe the loogie on the door handles

3. Don't sneeze right at the face of the fella 15cm from you

etc..

Human to human transmission has already been confirmed.  Also:

The incubation period — the time from exposure to the onset of symptoms — is believed to be about two weeks.

So screening is not effective in the first two weeks of someone with the virus.

Very good point. That time period before symptoms present is the un-detectable period. Best to take precautions when traveling.

the TH government the other day said daily airline flights just from Wuhan to various TH airports totaling about 1200 capacity per day.

But that was the pre NY tally. And it also was before other Chinese departure cities starting becoming potential spreading points for the virus.

Sounds like they should get their very own immigration line at the various airports.

Could you post some evidence of this? I believe you, just need some source material if you have it.

We are all doomed... The Asian virus will wipe out humanity!!  4 Dead so far... the yearly influenza kills thousands each year, pollution kills more each year, Donald Trump kills more each year...

It’s about to get real.  This is what happens when the world gets overpopulated.  During the holidays in China, they said there are 40 billion trips inside the country, and many young people decided to travel outside
