Plans to give tourists cash coupons widely criticised - “It’s like paying foreigners to visit Thailand”

Featured Replies

Will the vouchers be given in the usual brown envelopes?????

I was with a group of Thai friends  yesterday and they were bitterly complaining that the government is willing to do 'this & that' for tourists. They complained that they wouldn't mid so if various revenues went to help the nation but they thought most would go to the military. They were pleased that the court didn't dissolve the FF party.

  • How about a voucher entitling me to enter a park for the same price as Thais? Or how about a voucher that stops Thai immigration from turning me back at the airport, even though they sold me a VI

Yep, never give a discount to a farang!! What the hell were they thinking? That wasnt a very Thai thing to suggest at all.

  • Bar fine tokens sounds reasonable....

Dear government, please turn that amount of coupons to make the country more natural friendly, to reduce mess and pollution and garbage etc. to make your once ago paradise like country to be restored on green way, to be it more attractive for every normal human senses people including for own people and others as well which can benefit everyone and everything on global way, don’t just try to look until the end of your nose, expand those issues first nationally then globally for your own and everyone’s good, don’t directly focus on the temporary money flowing tourism in your country, if you make everything nice and proper the flawless tourism will be the consequence of that, do not look at and try to cure the symptom, try to look for the reasons behind the symptoms and to handle that first, this is the only way to solve the problem.

Would soi 6 bars be considered a tourist attraction where's my money ????

What a way to waste away your tax payers' tax money down the window.

Wow! Thought bubble after a bottle of wiskey. Good idea. Vacuous. Def: Pipat Ratchakitprakarn and all the other idiots running the show.

Why not give N95 masks and a free pass to ALL National Parks ?

Of course they should not get more stuff for free!

They already get free pollution and now also a chance of free corona virus.

Maybe make Thais pay the foreigner price for everything else.

The way things are going they may need to offer real cash for tourists to arrive, 10 K Baht should do nicely ????

I fail to see how the majority of tourists, who pay hundreds of €, £ or $ just on flights alone, can be persuaded to (re)visit by a THB 1,000, 2,000 or even 3,000 discount.

Those kinds of promotions might be attractive to whose travellers who sit around a table sharing a small bottle of Coke between 3 - 4 people, but certainly not the majority of holidaymakers.

So it's okay to subsidise Thais to "eat-shop-spend" who would otherwise sit at home and drink themselves into a stupor but not extend the same to foreigners to maybe encourage a little more spending?

Okay good luck, when the only people who are left in Thailand are the Thais....

The "Eat, Shop, Spend" scheme last year saw 1,000 baht vouchers handed out to 11+ million Thai people.

Living in Nong Khai I could witness hundreds, if not thousands, driving from Udon Thani to Nong Khai - go shopping - and go back to Udon again. Statistically correct but totally off scale as far as tourism promotion was concerned; the shop on Meechai road did THRIVING business accepting vouchers for stuff which all those visitors could have gotten for the same or eater price in Udon (but not against the voucher).

The taxpayer and not the government forked out the 11+ billions of Thai Baht - so I am sure that many are delighted that they substidized shopping trips of their fellow countrymen.

Free for over the counter withdrawals

Maybe you are not aware that most banks i.e. the issuer of the Visa Card charge in the area of 3% (instead of 0 or 1 % for ATM use) for the whole transaction if you decided to use over the counter transaction which makes it substantially more expensive than the 225 Baht fee.

They just don't get it - tourism in Thailand is done. The Chinese flu is the last nail in the coffin.

Nobody from Europe will be booking flights to Asian holidays with all this <deleted> going on, it's much easier to go to the Caribbean or somewhere else nice and warm, nearer too!

Somebody has got it wrong! why give out incentives to tourists when TAT say numbers are up 4.5% in December. And additional growth expected this year.Give bonus all round to TAT staff for achieving wonderful result.

Double the booze tax to Thais to discourage their drunkenness and encourage Buddhist ways but axe the tax for heathen farangs so that we don't care. Result happiness.

However, late on Friday, TAT governor Yuthasak Supasorn told Thai daily Khaosod the whole thing was a misunderstanding

This "misunderstanding" phrase is so typical Thai and has been done to death similar like brake failure or microsleep for car accidents. Just an excuse for stupidity and irresponsibility.

How about thinking before flouting nonsense?
