Pattaya: Coronavirus expected to hit hard as crisis meeting mulls options

Manager reported that Pattaya and Rayong - very much a gateway to Thailand as well as a destination in their own right - would be hit particularly hard by the effects on tourism of the coronavirus.

Chonburi provincial bigwigs, U-Tapao airport officials, the TAT, and Pattaya City Hall met at Nong Nooch gardens, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the province.

The best they could come up with to offset the expected lack of tour groups and families over the coming weeks was to make Nong Nooch gardens free for any Thai coming from Chonburi.

There are 1.74 million Thais in Chonburi and all they need to do is present their ID card at the gardens.

Nong Nooch chairman Kamphon Thansajja said that this would be a shot in the arm for tourism.

Manager reported that screening at U-Tapao was being stepped up after 80 deaths in China among 2,700 people affected with the deadly new virus.

Earlier reports suggested Thailand could face a drop in tourist arrivals of several percent and a 50 billion baht shortfall even if the virus is contained quickly.

Money, money, money, thats all you hear about here, money.

We will lose money, sod the fact people are dropping all over the place, some even dying.

Pathetic that we hear tourist numbers will be down, 50 billion baht lost.

Please help me to understand this. It will help Nong Nooch if the people come and don't pay anything?

Omg do i need to stand up and take control or something? I dont know the first thing about running a country and would never want to becaus ei would be inpeached in a heart beat but dam i would do a better job than anyone here.

Rule number 1 dont let people unecessarly put themselves at risk which then would be there families also as a result.

Free entry and die! Real smart! People please dont listen to these idiots. Get some masks, stock up and wait it out if your in a risk area.

If you are going to consistently offer reasonable, sane and calm advice ... I am afraid you may be prohibited from posting

Exactly.  Slow down, avoid crowds, wash your hands more, don't touch your face as much, stay off planes ... in other words "Think!  And take responsibility for your health instead of waiting for any government to do it for you!"

Ok, I am not going to ask you explain why a fatal disease that were it to last 6 months would be a global pandemic is something to wish for ... I am a bit interested to learn the how and why you think it would be good for the Thai Baht ...

That being said, my gold holdings are doing quite nicely, thank you ... and expect them to increase 10% in the future.

Well that is only likely to offset the loss in numbers, certainly not takings a the gate. Anyhow, not a new idea, Korat went free earlier in the Month, my Mrs went!

Good excuse to claim that the virus has stopped tourists coming it was less than a week ago when TAT were claiming 30,000 Chinese on there way to Koh Samui

Here in Pattaya there is an easy fix. Lure all Chinese tourists to the island they love so much anyway (Koh Larn) and don't bring them back to the mainland.

How about being clever for once in your life and make it across the board then people would go there, ehat one pocket looses the other gains....LOL

It gives me a great feeling of security to know that Prayut and Pipat are on the case. We have such great leadership in Thailand that nothing can possibly wrong....these leaders blessed with honesty and foresight can prevent anything bad from happening.

Now we need TAT to step up to the plate with some increased forecasts let's say we will have 40 million visitors from China in 2020, as they try to escape the coronavirus over there.

Sorry, but maybe I'm stupid or something. How in the hell is making entrance for Thai people free going to do anything to encourage visits to Nong Nooch? How does that make it safer for anyone or for anything. I'm always amazed, but rarely surprised at the clueless comments and solutions I hear coming from so many Thai officials. I love living here but have to put up with this so often. Luckily, it's probably my biggest complaint living here. I'm happy to live in the Kingdom.

..open it up make it free get people mixing and get the virus spreading even more and faster..

I don't see a problem. Everything is under control.

December 31st 29.69 baht to the dollar now 30.7 Losing the Chinese tourists is going to hurt the economy big time.

My suggestion let's scrap the TM30 and encourage all tourists to come to Thailand not just China and India.

Create more visa options and incentives to visit Thailand for all tourists!

Certainly not ;
but the Thai authorities as a whole are completely missing the mark.
  .
Giving Thai people in Chonburi the opportunity to visit Nong Nuoch for free will significantly increase the number of people likely to be affected by this virus as it is the most visited place by Chinese people in this province.
another question: how many chinese people wander around with a thai identity card, whether true or false?
Let's not forget that at KSR you can buy more real than real ...

As NCC rightly points out, the best is of course to stay at home and avoid unnecessary travel

and a last one "for the road" as we say here: how many Chinese people work legally or illegally in Pattaya and  Rayong and in the two provinces?

They're not invited so won't be paying anything. They're desperate but not for your money

The longer it lasts, the further it will spread in other countries. Epidemiology obviously isn't your strong suit.

Hmmm... usually for a virus to spread you need people.... TIT

Karma just hit the gov propaganda..
