Thai tourism faces up to Bt100 bn loss from fear of virus

Thanawat, left

The coronavirus outbreak, if prolonged until March, could cost the Thai tourism industry between Bt80 billion to Bt100 billion or between 0.5 percentage point and 0.7 percentage point of the country's GDP, said Thanawat Phonvichai, president of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce.

He added that his estimate on the loss was based on the number of Chinese arrivals in Thailand of around one million per month with approximate spending of Bt50,000 per head.

The virus has resulted in a decline in the number of Chinese arrivals as China recently banned overseas group tours. This will hurt airline, hotels and resort businesses as well as the sales of souvenir.

When coupled with other negative factors, it will result in the growth of Thai GDP lower than 2.5 per cent this year, he added.

Thai Airways International president Sumeth Damrongchaitham said that the outbreak had affected THAI operations to a certain extent as the carrier operates few routes to China.

So are they going to charge the Corona virus with adversely affecting the industry and the fine reputation of the destinations?

  • Never mind, the Indians are still coming in droves and spending big, they'll prop you up! Right?

  • The Light that Failed. Back to back years. First a boat sank. Now a virus.   I wonder how TAT will spin it?! Obviously more news reports of % per cent gains in numbers, but that is like

The Light that Failed.

Back to back years. First a boat sank. Now a virus.

I wonder how TAT will spin it?! Obviously more news reports of % per cent gains in numbers, but that is like tales of taxi drivers returning passengers money, no one believes it any more.

Are they serious, I think tourism will be off the cards for a while as things get worse, take two panadol, get some rest and everything will be alright.

It's glorious. Long may they suffer.

For the first time in YEARS I'm thinking of selling some baht.  Not yet.  The baht has weakened in the last few weeks, BUT not like it's super worried over losing Pattaya or Bangkok.

OK, like I said before, I'll wait until a bar girl gets it.  Call me crazy, but that would significantly hurt the economy.  I'm not even near any "red light" districts, so I have no idea what's going on....

OK, let me know if you hear anything.  I have a feeling they might not want to share a bar girl getting it....so then maybe I will just watch the baht.

anyhow, this is life.  i thought the baht would strengthen for years.

Tat are now rubbing their hands as they have a nice neat get out for the deplorable tourist figures.

No cause for concern, all under control like the pollution levels from big business burning sugar crops, just put a water jet blaster

at the airport and bingo, all sorted.

we might see some pop up cardboard doctor and nurses at the airport soon.

How come the fortune teller which TAT consulted did not forsee this????????????????????

That happens if these brainiacs do everything unsustainable...

- unsustainable sugar cane industry, air pollution everywhere...

- unsustainable farming, did u know if u eat street food in bangkok daily you will take around 8 litres of pesticides into your body per year?

- unsustainable tourism depening on ever growing fancy rates of tourists arriving.... without giving af about what happens to nature and infrastructure here

This whole country, ahhh the whole region of SEA is so unsustainable, was about time people realize they are skrewed.

Always got to blame something... instead of using money to entice tourists to come with ridiculous vouchers why not spend it cleaning up the "toilet of a country" put in public facilities that are modern, and accessible to all [invalids included] sort out the roads, the pavements, the beaches, the water quality, the air quality etc etc etc etc

They might just charge those carrying the virus and blame them for not taking proper precautions against infection.

Because it's UNfortunate!

Thailand was already unattractive for many because of the air pollution and high baht. Fortunately for them they now have something tangible to point their finger at instead of just pretending not to see the elephant in the room

Will Chinese have to buy insurance from a Thai company to visit? Seems like they might be higher risk. And if they infect others?

They should make a bronze statue for Kobkarn. Such a bright idea to go for the Chinese low cost tours and drive the Europeans away.

A legitimate fear to an illegitimate government

I'm sure the Chinese already have the cure, just ask your local traditional medicine practitioner. Most likely dried and ground bat.

Has anyone noticed that western currencies have risen during the past few trading days?  Could it be that some country has put all resources into a medical emergency—and stopped pounding the USD?

No worries; they sent a delegation to Eastern Europe to woo the Gypsy's to come here for their Holidays.   What they are too dumb to realise is that the Gypsy's are bigger thieves than what they are and they will only come to plunder the local's here like they've done all over Western Europe !

For once try putting the Thai peoples health first & then worry about your bloo.. money

It couldn’t have come at a better time as has been quoted above.

OOhhh, I say! If they come they'll be caught. Don't forget that we now have Biometrics, BMW cars, laptops with internet connection and thanks to P.O.T.Y. Yinn's great observational skills, a roof mounted camera which is obviously of cutting edge design. In fact , it looks somewhat similar to the 'forefront of technology' equipment the BBC had on their Licence Detector Vans many years ago.

you beat me to it - what a great timely cop-out for TAT - with some clever twisting they should be able to spin it out for quite some time into the future.
