How prepared is Thailand to deal with coronavirus outbreak?

I was travelling to Bangkok during the hight of the SARS- panic!

Upon arrival at Swampy, every passenger was greeted by a cute Thai- nurse, who did ansolutely zero, except smile sweet and hand out "Hello Kitty"- masks!

They also had one of these heat- sensor- monitors set up (I cam't be arsed to google, but it is that thing, that shows the human body in different colors, depending on the temperature).

I swear by everything that is dear to me: the picture on that monitor did not change ONCE- not with 3 passengers in front of me, not with me, not with a friend, traveling with me!

According to the monitor, we all had the exact same body- temperatur and we DIDN'T EVEN MOVE!

Go figure!

Thailand has the resources, no doubt about that. And they have very good medical facilities. But, do they have competent leadership? This is an emergency situation. It needs to be dealt with, and it n

That's not absolutely zero. She was herding the cattle and easing the panic. The clueless need that.

You did all have the same temperature if there was nothing wrong with you.

Thailand on Tuesday announced its 14th case of coronavirus infection, which is the highest outside of China.

Scientists and academics around the world have warned that Thailand is the country most at risk from the spread of coronavirus, due to the number of people who have travelled from Wuhan, the city at the centre of the outbreak, to Thailand

Reading the above they're not prepared to do much at all accept count the cost of trying to make a few extra baht over the Chinese New Year...

Maybe T.A.T will make a donation towards the cost of the sick people who will be recovering in hospital due to their greed?

The index found that only 13 countries had sufficient resources to put up a fight against a pandemic. The good news is that Thailand is one of them.

Thailand has extensive experience with communicable diseases ????

This figure can't be correct. I definitely read that it was 100% controllable, along with turning the sea back and turning base metal into gold.

And If it doesn't kill him it must make him flee ????

Interesting title to the article. Is it actually feasible, possible to be prepared for a strain of influenza when it first breaks out, regardless of where it breaks out?

We live in a global fast moving world. Short of telling everyone in the place and country of origin to stay in their own homes and call EMS services if symptoms arise people are going to get ill. This is an after-transmission action anyway ... always. Containment of any virus takes time to organise. Up until a day or two ago they did not even know it’s incubation period so his without understanding of the virus can any effective measures be taken by anyone other than imposing generic disease containment protocols which are always shot-gun approaches.

As for those here who want to do their obvious and bag Thailand ... again, How boringly predictable you lot are!

Three paracetamols should do it. With the cheap 30b diagnostics executed in 4 secs by the ultra reliable somchai at the Isaan clinic we got nada to worry about.

"Meanwhile, Thailand’s state railway, key transport modes, shopping malls hospitals and hotels have stepped up hygiene measures in a bid to halt the spread of coronavirus. "

If only 'hygiene' extended elsewhere too - should eventually become a 'mind-set' - even for the soi dogs!

My first instinct is take the week off with plenty of bed rest. I wouldn't be surprised to have to pay a premium to be quarantined.

Exactly, who can afford to be quarantined here in Thailand for ….how many days wil they eke out of you at inflated prices?

Here they sent you home with a bag of antibiotics for a viral infection ???? - totally useless.

Some people have started wearing facemasks, although expert opinion is mixed on the benefits of this.

More people are wearing facemasks now in BKK because of the coronavirus than they ever did at the height of the air pollution atrocity.

And, expert opinion is NOT so mixed on the value of wearing N95 facemasks (vs. the paper drugstore kind) and following other hygiene recommendations.

There's a reason medical staff who have to deal with virus cases and potential virus cases are wearing those exact same kind of N95 masks....

Thailand is just as prepared as any other country on Earth.

There is no vaccine.

Antibiotics don't work.

Not much any country can do, rich or poor.

C'mon, give it a rest TVF worrywarts.

Get what you lack and get on with your life.

Life's too short to spend time worrying about things you can't change.

Clearly, Thailand is on the wrong end of this Wuhan virus.  Instead of passively waiting for China to restrict flights—they should proactively stop all flights from China.  No wonder Thailand has the #2 infection rate.  Time to grow a pair, Thailand.

Too late to grow balls. It's out in the wild already. Might slow down the rate a bit.

Even Thailand’s public health minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, has admitted that while the situation is under control, Thailand is unable to stop the spread of the disease.

Now there’s a contradiction.

Under control vs unable to stop it.

And this from the Thai in charge of the nation’s health..... Genius!

Can anyone explain this to me? <deleted> is wrong with the Thai brain?

What ?  But it’s so fun to pound  the keyboards and create unnecessary hysteria , panic and live our lives in fear!

I agree with 007 WHY? is Thailand still allowing incoming flights from china.

I think a ordinary working Thai friend of mine, when I mentioned this wrapped  it all up in these words. "Thailand only think of money. Welcome to Thailand."

Just wait 8-10 more days. If the cases go up slowly, but stay within the 2 digits range, then everything will be fine. Scenario 2..... it hits the 500+ ...good luck to Thailand. Can anyone seriously think of Bangkok being quarantined? I can`t, as life/conditions here are so different to China. Cmon...so many local people can`t even stay away 2 weeks from work, without getting problems with the money...and as it`s Thailand, they surely wouldn`t get a 2 week paid holiday.

So just hope for the 1st scenario. I`m not an expert at all, but after looking at the statistics from the last days I expect in the end around 100k infections, from which > 95% stay within China.

Maybe it looks smart to wear a 0,20 Baht face mask but they are useless for the Wuhan virus and for the smoked  air.

So what are you meant to do if you suspect you have the virus?

Head to the local hospital and sneeze over everyone there? or something else?

2 paracetamol every 4 hours. Drink plenty of fluids. Keep cool in a well ventilated room.

Monitor your temperature. 37.5C normal. 38 - 40 fever (see above). 40 - 42 call a doctor (go to hospital). 43 - 44C Call a hearse.

Anyone got any better ideas?

Dr Turner knows perfectly the customs of Thailand.
This is exactly it.

Prayut has already said they have this 100% under control. I believe he knows exactly what he’s doing.
