In-laws and children will double or triple the "cost" If she tires of you, she gets 50% when divorcing, gets the children, the house, etc... never heard of a prenup being enforced in Thailand BTW Love and respect is a beautiful thing that can be ruined by getting married, IMO If you are young and in love, go for it, but realize there are no "guarantees" in life am a bit biased and cynical as you can see. Know there are some men here happy to be married Peace ✌️ 1
URMySunshine
At the wedding there should be a brief hiatus before tying the knot to see if there are any final better offers before bringing down the hammer on the deal.

Lots of glum faces all round and sinsod wasn't mentioned again. I paid nothing. My wife brought this topic up once. I said I'm not paying for a wife, it is against my culture. In fact, I told her, since I'll be looking after her for the rest of my life, her parents should pay me for relieving them of that responsibility. She never brought this topic up again. Her parents even covered all the costs associated with her side of the family coming to our town for the wedding. BTW, my wife has a uni degree, paid for her own new car, worked in the engineering field for ten years, no kids, no prior husband, and is very attractive (even for Thailand). No drugs or smoking, and barely drinks alcohol. Her parents did a great job raising her. I'm financially independent so the money itself isn't the issue. I would rather people be <deleted> at me than get suckered out of my money. I don't care if it is 100 baht, a 100,000, or a million. Her family know I am financially well off so they don't need me to pay a sinsod to prove it.

Everyone different. A friend borrowed 900k from me to show off the money as his sinsod. He already spent around a million for the house for them to live. In Phang Nga, between Natai and Khok Kloi.

Popular Post Kadilo
The irony of those who look down their nose at guys who married ex Bar Girls but are happy to pay the biggest Bar fine going because it makes them feel they are part of the culture. Like many Countries, people are good at remembering their culture when it suits. Edited January 30, 2020 by Kadilo 2

Brit culture, much like Thai culture, only in the UK the women are bigger when you marry them, and you pay the sin sod when the marriage ends. I conclude that Thailand is still part of the fourth world. 2
Popular Post richard_smith237
Yes, I paid Sin-Sod, but only on the agreement that a big deal was not made about it and the amount was not announced. I accepted the tradition but also discussed that in the UK paying sin-sod is considered somewhat outdated and the discussion or announcement of money considered vulgar. I emphasised to my in-laws that our marriage was a meeting of cultures rather than me solely adopting Thai culture and tradition - this was also about setting a precedent for how things would work in the coming future. The 400k Sin-Sod was returned to us. The Wedding itself cost about 1.3MB, we recovered that in envelope money (about 800 guests - mostly friends of my in-laws). My Wife is 3 years younger than I, we married when she was 30. She’s a Thammarsat Masters Grad, has worked as a Marketing Manager for International companies and is now ‘house-wife’ who does most of the running around for our son. We continue to have a great relationship with the In-Laws who visit us (their grandson) a couple of times per-week.

CNXexpat
I married my wife 13 years ago in Europe. After that I was the first time in Thailand and we visited her parents. I have heard about the sinsod before and asked my wife if and how much I have to pay and she has to decide if we´ll have a good vacation in 5* hotels or I pay sinsod and we stay in 3* hotels. She thought a few seconds and said: "My parents have enough money, let´s have a luxury trip". At here parents town she told her parents that we will invite them and all friends and relatives for a nice dinner. Some dozens people came, I paid a few 1,000 Baht for Thai food and drinks and that´s it. 1
