The number of Chinese tourist arrivals in Thailand is expected to decline by 2.4 million in the first half of this year as a result of the novel coronavirus outbreak in the country, according to TMB Analytics, an economic analysis division of TMB Bank.

The decline in arrivals from China is estimated to cost the tourism sector more than Bt100 billion this year.

The sector will be hit hard in the first quarter of the year, with many holidays on the chinese calendar, before the situation improves in the mid of the year.

TMB Analytics estimated that the number of foreign tourist arrivals in Thailand this year will fall to 38.7 million from 40.8 million in its previous forecast.

The revenue of the tourism and related sectors is expected to decline by over Bt100 billion, of which over Bt70 billion loss will be seen in the hotel, restaurant and retail segments.

By sector, the hotel business is expected to face revenue loss of Bt28.4 billion, retail Bt28.4 billion, and restaurants Bt18.9 billion. 7,500 hotels  are expected to be affected, especially those located in Bangkok, Phuket, Chonburi, Krabi, Surat Thani, Chiang Mai and Pang-Nga. The seven provinces, popular with Chinese tourists, have a total of 4,763 properties, accounting for 65 per cent of all hotels in Thailand.

does this mean hotel prices will double?

  • I wasn't aware they ever rejected western tourists.   All I know is that Western tourists either couldn't afford to go holiday in Thailand anymore, because their currencies tanked massively

All I know is that Western tourists either couldn't afford to go holiday in Thailand anymore, because their currencies tanked massively against the Thai Baht, orr they were too cheap to spend the money.

Take note the visa regulations everyone get on his high horse about do not affect a TOURIST.

Uh Oh...government may be meeting now to levy new visa fees for foreigners to make up the loss in tourism baht...

Just imagine...1000000 baht held in Thai banks by retirees...

What does money in the bank have to do with visa fees? I would happily keep 1 million or more in the bank if they reduce the visa or multiple reentry fees.

And how big a loss when half of Thailand is in ICU because they let the carriers roam free?

Your joking right ? You'd keep 1 million baht in the bank to reduce the cost of a do it yourself visa for 2-3,000 baht ?

Unfortunately, TAT caught a case of the Wuhan virus, and won’t be available for further comment...

Oh no these unexplained unusually wealthy uniforms might have to bring some sacks back????

Hotel, restaurant owners in tourist place.

And their workers.

And the workers familys.

Tour companies.

And their workers.

Land their familys.

Bus drivers, owners of shops for Chinese tourist.

Etc etc etc.

The Chinese spend the most. Most important foreigner tourist for Thailand economy. Sure. Love shopping, love tour, love eating expansive food.

IMO, everyone worry to much about this. Just same the flu. Nobody die in Thailand from corona. More people die on road, electric shock, other safety accident, air pollution, AIDS, murder today. Yesterday, tomorrow. Last week, next week.

IMO, maybe I wrong. IMO is to much panic this one.

IMO.

They'd all prolly give more of a sheet if they started dropping dead.... but Ohh no the short shortsightedness of an empty wallet is all that concerns.

As this is China's fault they should be held liable for any losses (Human or financial).

Plus your hospital costs after you contract a dose of Coronavirus. Senior Citizens are more at risk.

Only one religion in Thailand, thats Money

No, not joking. I keep more than that in the bank anyway and have done so for years. Side benefit is that the exchange rates had not affected me in any way since years.

What is the headline referring to exactly? In the U.S they call a billion as equal to 1000 millions. In the U.K and most of the rest of the world they call a billion as equal to 1,000,000 millions. (my thanks to Yahoo for that info). There's a big difference in the perceived spending of 2.4 million Chinese.

Yes, I stated some time ago about the 800,000 baht becoming 1 million!!

To quote a prominent Thai person from the time just before the Spanish flu:

'Money is their God. Life itself is of little value compared with the leanest bank account.'

He was referring to the Chinese in Thailand. Not much has changed, except they have now taken over the government.

Bread and water all round, then!  And the fat cats will still be lapping the cream; nothing much changes here.

THAI STYLE of economics

increase price and why not make it more difficult for those pesky EXPATS that live here and spend hundreds of thousands of baht, EACH YEAR

sorry, that is a TRILLION .. like the 18 trillion dollars DEBT of the USA

Maybe TAT is using this to stop themsleves being sacked when money from tourism does not meet their every increasing projections?  Sorry your Lordship - the Coranavirus did it - until then we were way above target - not our fault.

That recession is getting closer every day.

I would be surprised if the tourist numbers were not down this virus from China will certainly have people who were thinking of coming to Thailand

Look at their travelling plans and go else where or leave until more is known on how the virus plays out

Plus the smog  wont help matters either

I almost bought a mandarin orange yesterday. Changed my mind at the last moment.
