Thai media is full of harrowing tales of bravery, sacrifice and tragedy in the wake of the horrific shootings at Terminal 21 in Korat at the weekend when a soldier went on the rampage.

One that epitomises the sense of terror and loss was reported on Facebook by a woman called Yuwaret Oi who related the story of a Singaporean man called Tae who arrived at Foodland on the ground floor with his 11 year old son on Saturday.

As trouble started Tae and his son and eight others took refuge in a cool room connected to the fresh food section of the supermarket.

Among the people hiding and in fear of their lives as gunfire rang out were a Thai man, his wife and their baby daughter.

Everyone was trying to keep quiet huddling together in the cramped and cold conditions fearing that any noise would alert the gunman to their presence.

One Thai man called Tik suggested that the group move a little further inside the building to an electrical room and seven of them did so.

The father of the baby said he was staying put.

That was the last conversation they had.

About one hour later the seven in the electrical room heard a sustained burst of gunfire and the sound of a door being kicked in. There were the anguished  cries of a little girl screaming.

This was just meters away from the seven who now believed their time had come. Under the guidance of Tik who was now their leader they prepared to rush the gunman if they got a chance to defend themselves. They kept still and quiet in preparation.

Tae thought that if he died fighting and his son lived it would be alright.

It proved unnecessary and at 3 am a contingent of soldiers came to rescue them and take them to hospital.

But the Thai mother, father and baby girl were all shot dead in the cool room.

The tragic little family were three among dozens of victims on a day of absolute terror in Korat.
