WHERE ARE WE GOING?

We are on the verge of a technologic explosion, as mankind learns more and more about the universe, and the big question for many is, ‘where are we going?’

If you take a look at the known history of mankind, we gradually developed from hunter-gatherers, defeating Neanderthal Man as an ice age took hold, to people that believed the earth was the centre of the universe, then we found out that our planet is actually orbiting our sun, along with our eight neighboring planets. Astronomy went on to gaze into the Milky Way, which, for many centuries, we believed was the total size of the universe. Then came the Hubble telescope; a way to observe stars millions of light years away, and suddenly we realized that there are literally billions of galaxies, and each galaxy has billions (that’s thousands of millions) of stars, each with at least one planet orbiting.

 

If you drew a graph of man’s technical progress over the centuries, you would see a slightly rising line, until we reach the Industrial Revolution, when steam driven machinery emerged, then came the two world wars, significant in terms of building man’s knowledge – very often, things were discovered while trying to create a weapon, so there were a lot of positive things to come out of the two world wars, which basically took us at least a century ahead of our time.

We discovered jet power and that was the start of global air travel, then, in the late 1950’s computers arrived on the scene and the first mention of the dots and zeros that are used in digital data streaming. The digital age had arrived and data processors began to get faster and offer larger memory; it’s hard to believe that only a century ago, man first took to the skies in a flying machine, and today we have supersonic jets that can travel in excess of Mach 5! We have hand-held devices that allow us to have face to face video calls to anyone in the world, we can actually tell our devices what to do, and with the arrival of super elements like graphene, we are preparing for lightning data streams and machines that can do anything.

 

Fossil Fuels

The industrial Revolution saw the insatiable need for raw materials such as coal and gas, as we learned how to create machines to do all the heavy work. At first, things were very manpower-heavy, and since the mid-19^th century, people around the world have been burning coal, as this seemingly endless supply allows us to use its energy. Of course, we all know that coal is made by compressed trees that turn into this black carbon material, and people tend to think along the lines of, ‘never mind, its only coming from underground and it won’t affect the planet’, yet they forget that it is the fossil fuel emissions that are causing a catastrophic change in the climate, and once the average global temperature has risen by 1.5C, this could be enough to start a chain of events that we could do nothing about. Those who defend the governments will eagerly point out that the powers that be are discussing strategies as we speak, yet those huge fossil fuel burning power stations are still churning out tonnes of carbon into our atmosphere.

 

Its All About the Money

It is abundantly clear to me that governments are lining their pockets and climate change takes a back seat, as the politicians and corporate bosses arrange the sucking up of all a nations’ resources, in return for some domestic aid and holiday homes in the Maldives. Throughout all organisations, especially governments, money rules and personal wealth is gathered at the expense of the environment, then you have people like Trump, who literally walks out on any serious attempt to cease fossil fuel burning or about climate change in general. Putting America first has clearly demonstrated to third world countries that it is OK to ignore climate change and continue to plunder the earth and forget about carbon emissions.

 

If you take the past 20 years, as an example, climate issues were rarely discussed, then, as the years went by, respected scientists were coming forward, concerned about the carbon emissions, science doesn’t lie ….. respective governments do commission environmental studies, so they know the truth, they know that we are heading toward a chain of events that could end up with the extinction of man, yet they continue to do nothing collectively.

 

Imagine what would happen if an alien race threatened us, within hours you would have a united world, one that would pool all of its considerable resources together to defeat the enemy. The ironic thing is we already have our enemy, ourselves, and what we are doing to the planet, yet despite tons of scientific data, nations of the world refuse to accept what is now obvious, even to teenagers, that global warming is happening and is in the process of acceleration.

 

Ask the experts and they’ll tell you that the amount of carbon dioxide we are putting into the atmosphere, will make the temperatures rise, and this will cause even more carbon dioxide to be released, and that, in turn, will further accelerate global warming. It’s a bit like building a small snowball at the top of a snowy peak and rolling it down …. It will get bigger as it picks up snow, which makes it heavier, which increases its weight and speed, and the longer this goes on, the bigger and heavier the snowball, until you have something that is unstoppable.

 

Some scientists believe that if we stopped everything now, this second; no more digging of resources, no more carbon emissions, no more pollution or plastic production ….. if we stopped it all, it might be too late; results of our behavior can take years to become evident, and we may well have already reached that critical point when the warming of the planet cannot be halted, just like the huge ball of snow that is flying down the mountain, getting bigger as it goes.

 

Are we Heading for Extinction?

There are a few learned scientists who think that we will destroy the planet before we have the technology to find a habitable planet; Stephen Hawking said that mankind is in a race to be able to get off this planet before we destroy it, and that seems to me like a fair assessment of where we’re at.

Imagine, just for one minute, that every single human being had the same goal, to improve the quality of life for every living thing on our planet! Imagine what could be achieved if the trillions of dollars spent on killing people was spent instead on environmental cleaning up, building schools, feeding the starving and all the other things that need to be redressed.

 

Artificial Intelligence

We are now fast reaching the point where machines we create can actually learn, and sooner or later, the singularity will be born; that’s the time when machines are more intelligent than we, their creators are.

 

What Would you Do?

Let’s for argument sake, say that you are one of these super-learning computers, and you’d already absorbed all the knowledge we have amassed since we evolved, it wouldn’t be long before you realized that humanity was the real problem for the planet. And being an entity with no emotion, you would surely do the right thing and begin to engineer the extinction of the human race?

 

So, what should we do? Should we just carry on, in the hope that we manage to affect the changes needed to stop climate change, or should we stand up and show governments that the time for action is now. Our house is burning down, and all the governments are discussing who is to blame and scheduling ‘talks’ to do something, which to me, is sheer lunacy.

 

Great Thunberg started a movement for the young people, those who will inherit this mess, and to those who think she doesn’t know what she’s talking about, the science backs her up!

 

Throughout our history, it’s constantly been proven that the people eventually win and force change, which points to possibly a co-ordinated global push by the people to demand climate action, and while they are at it, we should ban all war! I believe the alien life that’s already here has told governments that we will not be permitted to travel in space until we stop killing each other. Hard to believe that the US military is currently spending a staggering $700m a day, trying to kill Afghanistan people who live in a few dollars a day!

 

The US administration is war mongering, knowing that resources will really become scarce, they are underhandedly engineering public support for foreign invasions, and the rest of the world does nothing- like the bully who goes around the classroom picking on smaller kids- and of course, we are in all debt to the US, that’s how they weave their way into your country.

 

We might be remembered as the generation that turned the tide and made some headway to redress the terrible raping and plundering of this planet and all the life upon it, or we might be the generation that sat back and did nothing as the planet turned into a place that is uninhabitable for life as we know it.

Temps rose 8 degrees in the past. Nothing dangerous about 1.5 which is mostly natural.

 

Warming expands plant growth and cold kills far more if you actually researched this.

I believe we have ALREADY went beyond the point of stopping it. Maybe it cannot be stopped. And climate change will be tiddlywinks. We have been overfishing for a long time, and within ten years the bottom is going to drop out of tuna, salmon, Pacific salmon population plus groundfish etc. That is happening now but we don’t want to see it. They will go the way of cod, sardines, Atlantic salmon. Add in a few more years of drought and or floods. Like Thailand this year. That will be the norm and will be punctuated by some extremely bad ----. That is the immediate short term future. I’m positive people will still be in denial or like Ubon saying it’s a scam when the bottom drops out. The good and the bad, I will be dead in twenty to thirty years so.

BTW I am looking at doing some salmon fishing in BC or Alaska in the twenties. Get some selfies before they’re gone as it were.

IMO, population control measures/incentives were needed back in the 70's.  The earth does not have the ability to sustain 7 billion humans.  Starvation, malnutrition, and number of poor people without quality of life is growing every year. 

The way I see "technology" and human endeavours in my lifetime is that on one hand we have highly educated minds spending their lives looking for new ways to save people with medical treatments and technology, then on the other hand we highly educated engineers working for military purposes developing new ways to kill people with better aircraft, better drones, better bombs, better weapons.  Very contradictory.  

 

I believe as I have said before, the reason for most problems in the world is people's "beliefs" or religion.  Religion still plays a role in governments as it has since the middle ages and before.  Along with human greed and power, our species is not evolving in a way that will sustain itself.  

 

Until we as a species adopt reason and science instead of relying on faith based mythologies, we are doomed

If that is true. Meaning you have not had at least courses at University level in Biology, chemistry, and statistics, at a minimum, then you probably do not know enough to even know what you are talking about. All your information is coming from tertiary sources of magazine and newspaper articles deeply wrapped in a political bent which tends to over emphasize the "doom" as it sells advertising, and simplifies the science to lowest level of the ridiculous.

 

I highly recommend reading over at Judithcurry.com here you will be pointed to real research papers, from real scientists. Here you will be introduced to a new concept to take under consideration; That the truth is, that you know nothing.

 

This is not meant as a slight, I came to the same realization myself. Even with the science math background mentioned above, which is weak.

 

But if you read over there, and begin to question, the nearly every line of text which is not understandable  and find all you don't know from real study of primary sources, and attempt to really understand the science, you will come to find potentially, different conclusions to what you claimed to be truths about the climate.
