Vietnam imports may drag down Thai rice to Bt5,000 per tonne

Farmers in the northeast province of Kalasin have called on the government to impose penalties on the importers of rice from a neighbouring country, saying that the practice has led to price decrease in the domestic market .

The province has not been affected by drought.

Concerns grew among farmers on Thursday (Feb 20) after learning that traders had placed orders for rice from Vietnam at a cheaper price of Bt4,000 to Bt5,000 per tonne.

Farmers had a good year in 2019 with unmilled sticky rice selling at Bt12 per kilogramme and unmilled rice at around Bt15 to Bt18 per kg. They were hoping that prices would at least be Bt10-12 per kg this year, in order to make a proft, according to Prapad Phuwongkod (66), an ex-member of Kalasin Rice Farmer Association.

As drought persists in most farming areas, Prapad said rice from new harvests is estimated at around Bt10,000 - Bt12,000 per tonne this year and around Bt15,000 - Bt20,000 for unmilled rice.

Given rice from Vietnam is priced Bt4 - Bt5 cheaper than Thai produce per kilogramme , Farmer are concerned since the government did not a policy to import rice this year.

They asked the government and related agencies to investigate and issue measures on rice import from Vietnam, on the grounds that it would drag down Thai rice price and lower quality.

Prapad said price might drop to Bt 5,000 per tonne from the previous estimate of Bt20,000.

    Quite simply because the standard of living is lower in Vietnam. Why do clothing wholesalers in Thailand make the clothes they sell to Thai retailers in Cambodia or Vietnam? For the same reasons ;

For the same reasons ;
it's world trade ...

Our favorite delivery restaurant uses jasmin rice (according to my wife) but it consists of tiny pieces, no nice large grains...the taste is good though but it looks like b-choice or something inferior..

That´s a good question, but Assurancetourix have already given a bloody well written answer to that one.

I have a better question, though! How can the Thai farmers be so stupid, that they think Thailand can tell Vietnam to sell their rice for a higher price?

They aren't.  They're asking the Thai government to impose higher tariffs on imported rice.

I hate to say it but....

Way back when the rice scheme was on & they were paying Thai farmers more than market value & warehousing rice

The thinking was the market would be shorted & price would rise with demand

As we know that didn't happen but instead folks like Vietnam filled the void by growing more & more

While Thai farmers were happy to take more than what rice was worth on the govt scheme I told my wife back then this will likely end

badly as Thailand just created a major competitor

Now it comes back to haunt them & they lose more than the govt overpay ever earned them back then

jasmine fragrant gives away to Orange tainted

Trying to manipulate free trade again, the market dictates the price of commodities..

This will never happen because the rice trade in Thailand belongs to very wealthy Sino-Thai traders;
they only exist for profit and if Vietnamese rice is as good but 2 times cheaper than Thai rice, Thai producers will have to think about growing something else because nobody will lift a finger for them.

  Doubtful.  Thailand has a long history of imposing punitive tariffs to protect their wealthy monopolies.  Ref: see "Chang" and "Boon Rawd".

VH farmers are more pro active farmers who do not need to drink whiskey before and during a working day. VH rice is far better quality with next to no extoruon attached with most of the VH peoples being able to read, write and speak the global language of English.

Well that ain't stupid, that's how Thailand works, they make price agreements all the time...hence they won't show any retailprice on the markets.

They still don't understand how business works and think their corrupt ways of doing it will also work with other countries.

You speak of ancient times that young people cannot know.
The junta which currently governs , shot itself in the foot by making condemn Yingluck for having wanted to subsidize the rice producers;
now they cannot do the rear machine;
although they did it a little without any results, moreover, with the producers of raw rubber.
the current purchase price is around 15 to 16 baht per kg of blanchatres ball

and with the quarantine of hundreds of production plants in China, purchase prices can only fall;
for it is not only that;
the entire transportation system for manufactured goods is completely disorganized;
the trucks are sorely lacking in drivers and those who remain, when they manage to make an outward journey, cannot make the inward journey because they are systematically quarantined by the authorities; therefore full but stationary trucks;

Can't imagine what this could mean.

Because they probably spend more time working on the land.

This is a fairly typical Thai reaction to fair competition, and instead of whinging the Thais need to become more efficient.

You tell us about Thai breweries; one that makes the Chang and the other the Leo and the Singha
it has nothing to do with the smash price of Vietnamese rice compared to Thai rice.

On the other hand, you could tell us about the stupid niece of the boss of the Leo who called the Isaans people stupid buffaloes ;
which immediately jumped Chang's consumption in our provinces to the detriment of the Leo and the Singha

As of that was an easier task. ???????? Too me that sounds even more stupid and unaware of what really rules the country.

free trade , still not available in thailand in 2020

why not trade 1 ton of rice for 1 ton of soi dog meat ?

win win

  No one should call their fellow countrymen "stupid buffaloes" - I'm with you on that.

  And - no offense intended - but most Thai beers are just not very good.  Why?  Because your government imposes high taxes on good beer.  The result - Thai people drink Thai beer cos it's cheap.

It's not my government; I'm french and proud to be from Brittany ( province 29 )

Wait until Cambodia gets their act together and increases rice production.  They used to produce more rice than Vn or Thailand and have the land, rainfall/irrigation and farmers for rice growing.

Eat more potato's...
