You really can't fix stupid, staying at a hotel where you must present your passport to be copied. Kudos to the hotel for noticing the permission to stay stamp discrepancy. Off to IDC in Bangkok for at least a few weeks of hellish accommodation before being deported at your own expense and blacklisted for 10 years.

Perhaps the hotel had suspicions about the commercial use that the couple were using their hotel for and how it may have been identifiable in the pornographic videos.  That sure is their business.

Being cynical, I'm willing to bet the hotel waited until the guests had paid for the room before 'noticing' afterwards they were on overstay.

We wouldn't want something overstay to affect the hotel's income, would we?

In fairness, there could be a number of different reasons. 
1. hotel does reporting and person who does it is not the reception, so when that person picked up the over stay is when contact was made 

2. it is also possible , hotel did not contact immigration per say, but did online reporting.

3. Guests may have been real pests and pain in the butt.
