Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha told members of parliament, on the final scheduled day of the censure debate, that the Defence Ministry is determined to reform the military by downsizing the three armed forces to become more efficient and modern, with the aim of cutting the number of generals in half by the year 2028.

Speaking in his capacity as the Defence Minister, the Prime Minister stressed the necessity of strengthening the capabilities of the armed forces through procurement of modern armaments, such as submarines, to place them on a par with neighbouring countries, not for the purpose of war preparedness but to enhance bargaining power.

He said that the procurement of weaponry is carefully planned in advance and in accordance with the annual budgetary allocation. Regarding the downsizing of the military, the Prime Minister cited, for instance, that the number of tanks in each cavalry battalion has been reduced from 51 to 44, and armoured cars from 96 to 81.

  • Once again the master bu++shi++er is up to his usual. Why would it take 8 years to cut the amount of generals in half? It could be done in months if wanted.

  • Can expect only half as many coup's in the next 8 years then?

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan claimed that he was not involved in the procurement of Chinese submarines, as alleged by opposition MPs who claimed that he might have benefited from the deal.

WOW now that is unusual.

usually all ex-military leaders will tell how the army needs more budget

and more weapons and more and more and more...even if only to

defend their friends in the army.

salut, Mr. Genenral Prayuth !

If it's the bottom half you can give him his marching orders.

Where will the generals go? Easy question to answer. Dissolve oppostion parties and there'll be plenty of empty seats in parliment.

Still one half too many.

You can tell his is lying as his lips are moving. I still can’t understand (even after so many years here) the way officials talk what is clearly nonsense and expect people to believe them.

Didn't they just increase military spending?

Look at what they do not what they say!

Do you mean elect them to the Senate or Electoral Commission?

Of course not. More face-saving lies.

Once again, it's a reactionary announcement. He's reacting to the mounting pressure and comments from other political parties (or past political parties) and the youth movement.

Both have applied pressure and he thinks this announcement will pacify them.

Sorry Sir, they're out to get you now. You waited too long.

Maybe with less military he thinks there's less chance of being ousted by the military in a coup.

Whatever your opinion of Armed Forces in general, the British Army has always been reasonably described as 'professional' in respect to organization and structure. As of 2017, the British Army had approx 85 Brigadiers and Generals; The Thai Army has approx 1,750... What possible basis can there be for these numbers? I would like to hear somebody pose this simple question to the Thai Defense Minister.

Perhaps he's wagering that the 50% who are over 80 will no longer be with us.

Take them 8 years to get their fill ?

even tomorrow if he has balls;
8 years..why not 8 centuries?
In 8 years, if no general has been appointed in the meantime, a few hundred current generals will be dead and buried (or burned)
Never forget,
promises are only binding on those who believe in them

Reminds me of the abortion scandal. All those in favour of abortion have already been born. In this case, all those in favour of reducing generals in the Thai army by 50%, are already generals. Mind you, I can't say I disagree with this reduction because at the moment there are so many, that it seems like you get a generalship if you're first three times in the queue for the cookhouse.

Why only the military, all Thai government departments are top heavy with more chiefs than indians.

If you tune into the TV shows every evening, that show what the royals did today, cutting the ribbon at a Government office etc. Hundreds of bosses in their Pseudo military uniforms, there are a lot of mouths in the trough.
