BANGKOK – Companies providing coach services in Thailand plan to lay off employees as tourist arrivals sharply drop due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Thai Transportation Operators Association president Wasuchet Sophonsathien said on Wednesday that in the past two months Chinese tourists had cancelled their trips to Thailand.

“The Association’s members had lost income, having to park their 7,000 coaches and tour buses while more than 10,000 drivers and staffers suffer job losses,” he said.

If the situation is not improved within a month, the operators would have to consider laying off their employees, Wasuchet said.

Tour cancellations had led to hundreds of millions of baht in outstanding debts.  The operators would be burdened with over THB2 billion of operation costs, he added.

I walk to Tops every day with the wife and kid, we pass an ever growing number of stationary coaches - all of which are full. It appears nearly all the Thai drivers have moved their families into the coaches - cost cutting i guess

After the first couple of weeks when they realise they will never grasp correct use of indicators they could try teach them that they don't have sole rights to the outside lane on the the roads!

Have you not noticed the massive transport infrastructure projects on going?

Railways, roads and airports are all being upgraded, the major road networks in

the north east are unrecognisable from 5 years ago.

Wasn't it just yesterday when the TAT announced that January tourist arrivals were up by 2.46% over January 2019?
