The Consumer Protection Division of the Royal Thai Police is watching for retailers hoarding or overcharging for protective facemasks amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

Pol Maj General Natthasak Chaowanasai, its commander, said on Wednesday (March 4) the operation is run in tandem with the Commerce Ministry’s Department of Internal Trade.

“We have arrested 42 small-scale entrepreneurs,” he said, and some admitted they bought the masks for the express purpose of turning a handsome profit.

“The Government Pharmaceutical Organisation sells synthetic-fibre masks for Bt1, but these people were selling them for Bt15, causing a lot of trouble in the process,” Natthasak said.

They division is monitoring both physical retail outlets and websites where masks are sold, he said.

“Retailers who jack up the price, sell them without showing the price or hoard them can be imprisoned for up to seven years or fined Bt140,000 or both,” he warned.

“People who see this happening can let us know at www.consumer.police.go.th or the 1135 hotline.”

Passed through central Bangkok yesterday (4 March) and there were lots of roadside stalls selling hospital type face masks at very inflated prices (20 THB per mask).... I just wonder if these were from the cottage industry somewhere in Thailand that were recently reported to be recycling used masks - washed, tumble dried and ironed?

PS... Almost got lynched by a very irate seller when I took this photo.????

Converted to Kiwi dollars that’s less than the going rate here. I sold 12 boxes of 50 masks per box at an average of $60 each over the past two weeks. Only paid $5 a box last year. And the real classic now is after all the stupid media hype is to be safe is wash your hands fully.

The Thai government must know that the facemasks being sold by "small-scale entrepreneurs" will not protect against a corona or any other virus.

So why don't they come clean and tell Joe Public not to bother buying the wretched things - and if they do, definitely not to pay through the nose as this could spread nasty germs.

  • 4 weeks later...

True visions is price gouging its clients by billions every month.

Because of COVID-19, they are no longer are broadcasting any sports they are charging for.

True visions no longer is paying fees to broadcast these sports, yet, they refuse to reduce the bills accordingly.

Really?! Probably my biggest consumable - for drying after bum-gun use (see Ref. Comment HERE) and a plethora of one-time-use cleaning/drying tasks. I usually buy at promotion prices in quantity to get the best price/roll.

Totally agree. My hypothesis is that the main reason the virus has become a pandemic so quickly is that most of the public is not wearing an effective mask or no mask (even now, after) to slow its spread. Only the people with a/the viral infection should be wearing the cheap, common surgical/medical mask or any mask that filters exhaled air.

Once I started heavy use of my PM2.5/N95 (probably N99 due to upgrades I've mode on it) respirator-style mask in 2016,I have not had any kind of viral infection (cold/flu) I would typically contract at least a really bad cold once or twice a year prior to 2017). I rely on the mask especially around people to protect against airborne contaminates including even so-called "moderate/yellow" and above air pollution. I don't consider even the (rare in Bangkok) "good/green" level of pollution to be "good enough" for me. ????
