Storms on the way in N, NE, Central

BANGKOK: -- The weather bureau yesterday warned of thunderstorms in the North, Northeast and Central Thailand. Meanwhile storms in Angthong province destroyed 70 homes and much farmland.

The Meteorological Department reported southerly and southeasterly winds would bring humidity from the Gulf of Thailand to upper Thailand, causing scattered thunderstorms with gusting winds. A maritime warning is in effect with ocean swells of two metres.

The department warned North, Northeast and Central residents to be alert for thunderstorms from Monday to Thursday and to secure homes and other buildings.

In Angthong's Wiset Chai Chan district 70 families are homeless after storms destroyed their houses.

Pornpilai Pongchangyoo, 45, whose house was destroyed, said she and her husband had hung on for their lives when the storm hit.

"Last year we were hit by floods that forced us to sleep on the roof for a month, but we still had a place to live. Now our whole house is gone; we have nowhere else to go," she lamented.

There were no reports of fatalities or injuries.

Local poultry farms at Tambon Bang Chak reported hundreds of chickens killed.

Officials are inspecting damage and assisting those affected.

Meanwhile Nakhon Sawan is in the grip of drought. About 10,000 rai of off-season rice was damaged, and six districts were declared disaster areas. They are Krok Phra, Banphot Phisai, Chumsaeng, Nong Bua, Kao Lieo and Mae Pearn.

In Kalasin drought has reduced water volume in the Lam Pao dam in Sahatsakhan district to 679 million cubic metres, 48 per cent of capacity. The shortage will affect 200,000 rai of off-season rice.

Don't you have storms every year?

sure, but it is a new company. during the slow season i don't get too many trips, but today i had to cancel one due to the waves. not to happy about it but there isn't much i can do about it. just frustrated thats all. during the rainy season i'll have to find something else to do.

Yup - we're next to Rangsit Khlong 3. Brought down a tree in our garden. I'd just finished playing golf at Krung Kavee as the storm started. The car next to mine in the car-park there was hit by a large chunk of tree too. Power was off for a couple of hours.

Note to self: read the instructions on how to manually open the electric gate when there's no electricity...

Yeah, I was yacht racing as the storms passed through; nothing too severe, good times in fact. Although maybe not ideal for a rank beginner??

Yeah, probably fine for him but the people he would take out might be a bit :o

classic; I always wondered how you could use that green face; now i know :-)

Actually, doesn't get a big swell in the area aruond Pattaya anyway; there is usually a safe enough place to sail to; on the weekend it was light wind until 11am; big wind from 11am - 12pm then light again the rest of the day. Not exactly hard to read or predict; sail somewhere; relax inside for an hour, then sail again!

Mind you the sailing before and after the storm was a bit dull....

I just watched a short clip on BBC website about Thailand 'making' their own rain in hua hin? Was only couple of minutes long but pretty interesting

I always wondered why cloud seeding isn't tried on forest fires. I know it's had mixed results but the same aircraft that water-bomb could easily seed the clouds.

Well, we've had the, "gosh it's hot here" thread already this year, before that we had the "my goodness it's cold right now in the North" thread - will somebody please post the "it's awfully wet right now" thread and please get it over and done with!
