USA Citizen.I will be 63 in June, and I applied for Social Security disability(not life threatening) last week, while my disability case is going trough (could take a year) I also applied to start collecting regular Social security benefits. Two days after my application I received a call from the person handling my application , she was a very nice pleasant lady, and we has a very nice conversation asking me a few questions about my work history.

Much to my surprise, It was not one of these "bureaucrat" conversations but rather pleasant, much like if I was talking to a friend or neighbor.

Last night my wife said, "I have  good news for you, check the bank account" . I logged on to my checking account and there it was, Ny first check from Social Security.  It only took one week to start collecting!!!!!!

It was very pleasantly  surprise, because I was expecting a Three month delay , as I had read in my research, and I was planning to supplement my income from an Annuity, retirement savings type account , but with my account taking a big hit from the stock market crush, I was apprehensive about touching it .

Anyway, with all the bad news lately, I wanted to report some good news.

One week?  hmmm.  wonder if it is temporary approval of a disability benefit?  I have never heard of regular social security benefits starting in one week.  I am 63 in May but still working a bit since a contract job through a crazy high rate at me so I took it after "retiring" from Northrop.  I plan to wait another year or more for SSA as I have plenty of passive income to draw upon

I was just as surprised,

The amount deposited in my bank account was the same amount quoted that I will be receiving if I applied for regular SS now,and lower that what I would be getting under SS disability

This was the description in my account deposit:

Anyway, I have never seen the US government work so fast.

I've always been led to believe that once someone at SS Baltimore approves your paperwork, it heads to some enormous processing center in some other state to be entered into the system. That is, SS doesn't work like most customer service operations where the person you're chatting with can directly make changes in your records. That happens elsewhere, no doubt after more paperwork review. All in, it's usually a matter of weeks before money starts arriving.

Boomers are probably going to be the last generation that sees a SS check.  Enjoy the "socialism" that your generation constantly complains about

For regular SSA pension benefits you begin earning benefits the 1st day of the month you said you wanted the benefits to start and the SSA pays the following month.  Kinda, like getting paid for a job where you get paid once a month....you work the entire month and then get paid for that month shortly afterwards.

Example: If a person applied for their regular pension benefit to begin Mar 2020 and let's say all the paper work was immediately approved, then payment for March would not occur until April.   If asking for benefits to begin in April, application immediately approved, then payment occurs in May.

Now if the OP applied say in early March 2020 and said he wanted his benefits to begin Feb 2020 and lets say SSA approved his application triple ASAP in early March, then SSA would send his Feb benefit month payment in March right after the application had been approved.

Good to hear the SS pension benefit was approved so rapidly....normally it takes "at least several weeks" but some people get lucky with everything getting approved triple-ASAP.   And if the person had requested they begin earning benefits a month or two earlier than their application date, then they will get paid for those past months just as soon as the application is approved.

However, most people apply several months before they want their benefits to begin...the application get approved before the month the benefits begin month, so it can be months before they see their first payment.

Yeap...depends on when your asked for your benefits to begin and how fast the application was approved.

Thank you

that's exactly what happened. the person handling my case asked me if I wanted my benefitse to start on February, and told me what the difference in payment would had being if i waited a month , which I think was about $10 per month.

My surprise was that I got it so fast, I thought it would had taken three months, and then I would had received the first three months on one payment and proceed to perceive the rest normally. But a week later I had my first check.

It couldn't have come at a better time,as everything here in the US is shutting down, and having a guaranteed income every month is a releaf.
