Pattaya News reported that a 76 year old British pensioner was badly hurt after he fell down a hole in the street.

The accident happened in Chalermprakiat Soi 21, Bang Lamung, where there is underground cable laying taking place.

Mr John H. was pictured and seen in a video covered in blood with a ripped shirt.

He was aided by locals who called Sawang Boriboon rescue staff.

The rescue personnel gave him first aid and took him to Pattaya Memorial Hospital.

Locals said that despite having some barriers the area was badly lit.

You see a bunch of red construction barriers and fall into the hole?

Reminds me of my small town ,Wichianburi, years ago they were tarmacing a section of main road into town,to stop people driving on it they put a big log at either end,not painted white ,no lights, nothing, image hitting that at night, the area too was badly lit and logs left overnight.

Let's speculate.

A partly bad lit and quite narrow Soi (21 of 3rd road towards Soi Buakhao).

Narrowed even more by this construction site.

Maybe shoved aside by some ruthless scooter/car driver.

Don't expect them to adapt speed at such a Soi.

I bet he gets the bill for repairing the road thrown in for good measure!

Most of the time these cases are at the least a slightly lit Brit falls in hole on slightly lit street.

I remember looking both ways for chance to cross busy 2nd road to my destination before stepping off onto roadway and right into an open storm drain. No cover, no sign, no barriers, just me, cracked head, on the road with right leg buried in the drain. This was before crosswalks and far from a traffic light. I barely got clear before the Indy 500 hopefuls got there.

What do you think? There is supposed to be a fund given to victims of crime to cover hospital bills but outside of care administered on the street I bet he got a bill.

Looking at the video clip you either go into the road to the right of the barriers and risk getting mowed down by a drunk WIN or Baht bus driver, or try to negotiate the bit of pavement by the hole.

Good rule of thumb is to slow down in poorly lit areas and drive to the conditions.   But this is really tricky stuff to learn of course.

Checked another news source and you're right.   Another good rule of thumb is not to make assumptions.  my bad!

I think there's more holes than pavement in Pattaya at the moment. Looks like after an air raid.

No mask - 5000 Baht fine!

Sound advice, but was this chap not walking?

Many hundred Thai pass this place. No problem.

Only the Brit?

on his phone? Drunk? Blind? Alzheimers? Looking at pretty woman?

6 orange barrier, red and white tape. Not so dark. Is very big hole.

Or the coconuts hanging above the sidewalk...

The old fella would have had better odds not being hospitalized, by hanging around an arrivals gate from Wuhan, and licking all the arrivals.

Hope he's ok but it's odd that none of the usual suspects are speculating that he was probably drunk being out after dark; must be because he isn't Thai, Chinese or Russian.

Good idea, Don't want to give others the wrong impression that Farang's wear dirty clothes and never shower all the time.

What happened was probably the fault of the Pattaya Authorites, so they should not charge him for hospital treatment, but

hey! This is Thailand.

And if it's not a hole in the road, some other holes will get you.

If the foreigner hadn't be here, the accident wouldn't have happened.

It's the foreigner's fault. Thais don't make mistakes.

If someone started licking me at the airport after I arrived in Thailand from Wuhan (or anywhere), I guarantee the odds of being instantly hospitalized would be very high.
