Suvarnabhumi Airport is investigating an incident where an airport cleaning staff collapsed in front of the passenger terminal, raising fears among the public that she was infected with the new coronavirus (Covid-19).

Airport deputy director Kittipong Kittikachorn said on Wednesday (March 19) that the incident happened at 1.16pm on March 18. "Airport security office was alerted that a staff had collapsed in front of gate 5 on the second floor of the passenger terminal,” he said.

“The staff is an employee of A and P Maintenance Service (Thailand), which is a cleaning contractor within Suvarnabhumi Airport. She was rushed to a hospital to receive treatment, before being transferred to Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Institute to test for Covid-19.”

Kittipong said a preliminary examination revealed that the staff had a fever of 38.6 degrees Celsius and low blood pressure, along with difficulty in breathing and coughing. “She is still conscious and has no record of travelling to countries with high risk of infection,” he added. “Doctors are still looking into why she collapsed and have not concluded yet if she is infected with Covid-19.”

“Suvarnabhumi Airport has employed measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 by screening with thermal scanners everyone who enters the passenger terminal,” said Kittipong. “Moreover, we have periodically cleaned with disinfectants all the airport areas that have shared contact surfaces to boost the confidence of airport users and staff.”

You don't need to travel to high risk countries to get the virus. The airport itself is a risky place to get the virus.

seems that staff screening is working flawlessly, covid or not this person was very ill and not screened in a high risk environment - she has possibly spread long and far and on many surfaces

Nothing like a good 'Probe' in Thailand and if that doesn't work they will 'Mull' over the problem before setting up a 'Committee' overseen by a 'Panel'....by which time the afflicted has long since passed to another World !

I would guess the main intention of all this effort to control Covid-19 is more to protect the elderly and weak than anyone else yet I see plenty of old people working as security guards and cleaning ladies in busy businesses in here in Prathumthani. I suspect that's the way it is all over Thailand. I'd say people care about the the elderly but they tend to ignore the ones working for them, right in front of them doing the lower end jobs. And the risks people like cleaners and garbage pickup people take are never compensated.

The ''mai pen rai'' culture has met its match with this pandemic...its just a matter of time now.

She must have been tested already. Another cover up?

No better place to get COVID-19 than an airport. Add to which she's cleaning plenty of contaminated surfaces, far more risk than HIV needle stick.
