The 1918 flu epidemic should have been called the 'American flu', since it most likely originated in Kansas. The Americans got a free ride because of war time censorship, which did not apply in Spain where it was openly discussed. Hence it was called the Spanish flu, but it turned out it did not originate in Spain.

For all its draconian measures, the Chinese did try these to be fair, they were done too late. The lockdown of Wuhan came too late. We saw with the panedemic in Italy, which was caused by two Chinese tourists from Wuhan flying into Rome, that the virus has spread due to Chinese being able to enter other countries. But this is due also to the delayed response by European governments, not just China's delayed response. Almost all governments acted poorly in this crisis.

The German government too, in 2012 the Robert Koch Institute predicted the effects of a coronavirus pandemic. Angela Merkel had 8 years to prepare. She did nothing.

Thanks appreciate anyone talks with reason and evidence! I still think travel ban alone is dubious but my point is Italy didn't prepare other measures like social distancing when ban gave them time. Also I noticed(wiki) the first 3 patient in Italy(Rome, 2 Wuhan patients, 1 Italy returnee) was quickly tested and monitored(well done) didn't cause spread, but first superspreader likely be a 38yr Lombardy man no direct link to China, when he was ill misdiagonised as generic pneumnia, no isolation and infected others

Remuzzi says he is now hearing information about it from general practitioners. "They remember having seen very strange pneumonia, very severe, particularly in old people in December and even November," he says. "This means that the virus was circulating, at least in [the northern region of] Lombardy and before we were aware of this outbreak occurring in China."
